HOLY SPIRIT DESCENDED ON HIM / LUKE 3:22

Start Your Day Right Daily Devotion

(KJV) Luke 3:21-22

Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, 22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

Empowered for the Mission: The Descent of the Holy Spirit in Luke 3:21-22

The baptism of Jesus marks a pivotal shift in His earthly life, transitioning Him from a private life in Nazareth to a public ministry that would alter human history forever. While Luke 3:21-22 captures a deeply personal moment between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, it also provides a profound blueprint for our own spiritual journeys.

From the very beginning, Jesus was intimately connected to the Holy Spirit. He was conceived by the Spirit (Luke 1:34-35) and lived a life of perfect, sinless obedience. Yet, as He stands in the waters of the Jordan River, something distinct happens. The Holy Spirit descends upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and the voice of the Father declares, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

This moment was not about Jesus receiving the Spirit for the first time; rather, it was His public commissioning. It was the visible, tangible empowering of the Son for the grueling work of ministry, teaching, healing, and ultimately, the cross. If Jesus, the very Son of God, required the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to fulfill His earthly mission, how much more do we need that same power in our daily lives?

Too often, we try to accomplish God’s work in our own strength. We rely on our intellect, our talents, or our sheer willpower to navigate our callings, only to find ourselves exhausted and discouraged. Luke 3:21-22 reminds us that true kingdom impact only happens when we operate under the influence and power of the Holy Spirit. We must constantly return to the place of prayer, open ourselves to the Spirit’s guidance, and allow Him to equip us for the specific work God has set before us.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the beautiful powerful display of Your triune nature in the waters of the Jordan. Just as You publicly commissioned and empowered Your beloved Son through the descent of the Holy Spirit, we ask that You would pour out Your Spirit fresh upon us today. Forgive us for the times we have tried to walk in our own strength and resourcefulness. We recognize that we cannot fulfill Your calling on our lives without Your divine power. May Your Spirit guide our steps, ignite our hearts with love, and grant us the boldness to share Your truth with the world around us. Remind us daily of our identity as Your beloved children, and let our lives bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.
