The Art of Letting Go: What “Do Not Judge” Really Means

It is one of the most frequently quoted phrases in modern culture, plastered across social media and brought up in casual conversations: “Do not judge.”

Yet, Luke 6:37 is also one of the most misunderstood and frequently misused pieces of Scripture. Often, people use this principle as a shield to justify destructive behaviors or to shut down any form of moral accountability. But when Jesus spoke these words, He wasn’t calling for a complete shutdown of our critical thinking or discernment.

True discernment requires us to navigate life wisely, separating right from wrong. The danger lies when we transition from discerning actions to condemning hearts.

Discernment vs. Condemnation

God’s word explicitly tells us to use wisdom and make right judgments. In John 7:24, Jesus Himself says, “Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.” We are called to protect our hearts, guide our families, and accept or reject certain beliefs and behaviors based on God’s truth.

The problem arises when our “judgment” turns into a self-righteous weapon. Luke 6:37 reads:

“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven.”

Jesus is targeting the posture of our hearts. He is warning us against:

Hypocrisy: Attempting to expose the minor faults of others while completely overlooking our own massive blind spots.
Pride: Assuming we know the exact motives of someone else’s heart.
Final Judgment: Trying to step into the seat of God, who alone possesses the ultimate authority to pass final judgment.

Walking in Grace and Humility

When we look at others through a lens of strict judgment, we forget the massive debt of grace we have been forgiven ourselves. Proper corrections and moral boundaries must always be established, but they must be delivered with profound humility and grace.

If we want to live out the true essence of Luke 6:37, we must learn the art of letting go of the need to control, label, and condemn. Instead, we should channel that energy into self-examination and radical forgiveness.

A Closing Prayer for a Discerning Heart

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the beautiful, teaching truth of Your Word. Lord, forgive me for the times I have sat in the judgment seat that belongs solely to You. Forgive me for being quick to spot the flaws in those around me while ignoring the areas in my own heart that need Your healing and correction.

Grant me the gift of divine discernment. Help me to love what is good and reject what is harmful, but let me do so with a posture of deep humility. Strip away any pride or self-righteousness inside me. Remind me daily of the immense grace You have poured into my life, so that I may freely pour that same grace, forgiveness, and mercy onto others. Keep my heart soft, my eyes focused on my own growth, and my life securely rooted in Your love.
