Dressed Ready for Service: Living in Constant Readiness for Christ’s Return

What are you waiting for right now? A promotion? A vacation? A change in your circumstances?

Human beings spend a massive portion of their lives waiting. However, the way we wait matters. There is a vast difference between slouching on a couch waiting passively for a delivery, and standing alert at the door, fully dressed and prepared for an important guest.

In Luke 12:35-40, Jesus gives His followers a vivid command on how we should navigate our time on earth: “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning.”

Concerning the Lord’s return for His people, the New Testament church believed it was near and could happen at any time [Mark 13:35]. This was precisely the attitude Jesus desired because it kept His people prepared, alert, and living right. From the moment Jesus left the earth to the present day, He calls all of His followers to maintain this exact posture of spiritual readiness.

1. Attachment to Our Ultimate Treasure

To be ready for Jesus’ return, our hearts must first be anchored in the right place. Just a verse prior, Jesus reminds us, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” [Luke 12:34].

Jesus’ followers must be so attached to Him as their greatest love and treasure that their deepest hope and longing is for His return [Luke 12:35-37]. If our hands are tightly clutching the treasures of this world—wealth, comfort, or status—we will find ourselves completely unprepared for His arrival. True readiness begins when Jesus Himself is the prize we are waiting for.

2. Spiritually Dressed and Active

In the ancient world, to “dress for service” literally meant to gird your loins. People wore long robes that would trip them up if they tried to run or work. To get ready for action, they would gather up the fabric and tuck it into their belt so they could move freely.

For us today, we must be spiritually dressed. This means intentionally shedding sinful habits, living out His character traits, and actively serving His purposes as we wait for the uncertain time of Christ’s coming [Luke 12:38, 40]. Keeping our “lamps burning” means keeping our faith fueled through prayer, the Holy Spirit, and consistent obedience.

3. Looking for Christ, Not Just Signs

Christ could come at any time [Luke 12:38]. Because His return will be sudden and unexpected [Luke 12:40], we must be waiting and looking for Christ Himself, not for a series of signs or end-time events that might begin at any moment [Matthew 24:42, 44; John 14:3; 1 Corinthians 15:51].

Our assignment is not to obsessively chart out timelines, but to faithfully serve the Master so that whenever He knocks, we can immediately open the door for Him [Luke 12:35-36].

The Beautiful Paradox of the Ready Servant

Jesus closes this teaching with a staggering promise. He says that when the Master returns and finds His servants alert, He will dress Himself to serve, have them recline at the table, and wait on them [Luke 12:37].

The King of Kings promises to serve those who faithfully served Him. Let this incredible grace motivate us to fix our eyes on eternity, shake off spiritual laziness, and live every single day dressed and ready for action.

A Closing Prayer for Readiness

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the beautiful reminder that our lives on this earth have an eternal purpose. Forgive us for the times we have allowed our hearts to become heavy with the cares of this world, or distracted by temporary treasures.

Lord Jesus, we want to be found ready when You return. Help us to keep our spiritual garments tucked in and our lamps brightly burning. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit so that we may display Your character traits and faithfully execute Your purposes every single day. Keep us alert, joyful, and deeply in love with You as we look forward to Your sudden return. We love You, and we place our hope completely in You.

In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
