When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

Such Great Faith: Lessons from an Unexpected Believer

In the entire New Testament, there are only two times recorded where Jesus is genuinely amazed. One is when He marvels at the profound unbelief of the people in His hometown of Nazareth. The other occurs in Luke 7:9, where He marvels at an extraordinary, unexpected display of such great faith.

The person who captured the Savior’s attention wasn’t a religious scholar, a priest, or even one of His chosen disciples. He was a Roman centurion—a Gentile occupier and an outsider to the covenant of Israel.

What made this man’s faith so remarkable that Jesus stopped in His tracks?

1. A Faith Born out of Humility

The centurion needed a miracle. His highly valued servant was sick and on the verge of death. When Jesus agreed to come to his home, the officer sent friends with a shocking message: “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof” (Luke 7:6).

Though he was a powerful military commander with hundreds of men answering to his beck and call, he recognized his spiritual bankruptcy before Christ. True faith does not demand things from God based on our own merit. It always begins with a posture of absolute humility, recognizing who He is and who we are.

2. An Understanding of Absolute Authority

Because the centurion spent his life giving and taking orders, he understood how authority operated. He knew that a general didn’t need to physically stand on a battlefield to win a war; the general simply had to issue a command.

The centurion applied this logic to Jesus: “But say the word, and let my servant be healed” (Luke 7:7). He recognized that Jesus’ power wasn’t bound by geographic distance or physical touch. Jesus held supreme authority over sickness, nature, and life itself.

3. Trusting the Word Alone

Many of the people surrounding Jesus constantly demanded signs, wonders, or physical touch to believe. But this Roman soldier only required a word. When Jesus heard this, He turned to the crowd and uttered those famous words: “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith”.

Great faith does not require physical sight or immediate emotional validation. It rests entirely on the integrity of God’s character and the power of His spoken promises.

Moving Beyond Mustard Seeds

We often ask God to increase our faith, imagining it as a feeling we need to drum up inside ourselves. But the centurion teaches us that the greatness of our faith depends entirely on the greatness of the Object of our faith.

When we fully comprehend that Jesus rules over our health, our finances, our broken relationships, and our uncertain futures, we can stop frantically panicking. We can step back, trust His authority, and rest in His promises—knowing that He only needs to speak a word to change everything.

A Closing Prayer for Great Faith

Heavenly Father,

We come before You today humbled by the example of the centurion. Forgive us for the times we have limited Your power by our own small thinking, our doubts, and our anxieties. We recognize that You possess all authority in heaven and on earth.

Lord, give us a heart of deep humility. Remind us that Your Word alone is entirely sufficient to hold our lives together. When our circumstances whisper fear, grant us the grace to trust Your commands over what our eyes can see.

We lift up our burdens, our sicknesses, and our impossible situations to You today, knowing that You are able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think. Speak Your word of healing, peace, and deliverance over our lives.

May our lives reflect a confidence that honors You, and may our trust bring joy to Your heart.

In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray, Amen.
