The Fruit of the Vine: What Jesus Drank at the Last Supper

When we think of the Last Supper, our minds often immediately picture Jesus and His disciples sharing a traditional cup of wine. However, a closer look at the biblical text reveals a powerful truth about the purity of what was actually on that table.

In Luke 22:18, Jesus says, “For I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

Have you ever noticed that neither Luke nor any other New Testament writer uses the typical Greek word for wine (oinos) when describing this sacred occasion? Instead, it is consistently called “the cup,” “the cup of thanksgiving,” or “the fruit of the vine.” This deliberate choice of words points to a deeper spiritual and historical reality: the drink Jesus shared with His disciples was the pure, unfermented juice of the grape.

The Law of the Passover: Keeping Out the Leaven

To understand why this matters, we have to look back at the original Passover instructions given to Israel. The foundational Passover law strictly prohibited the presence of leaven or anything fermented during the holy week:

Exodus 12:15 bans seor, a word referring to yeast, leaven, or any agent that causes fermentation.
Exodus 12:19; 13:7 forbid hametz, which applies to anything that has undergone fermentation.

In scripture, leaven and fermentation are frequently used as symbols of corruption, sin, and decay. Because the Passover meal was a holy celebration of deliverance—and a prophetic shadow of the ultimate deliverance Jesus would provide—the elements had to be perfectly pure. Just as the bread had to be unleavened (unfermented), the fruit of the vine likewise had to be free from the decay of fermentation.

A Pure Promise for a Coming Kingdom

By drinking the pure, uncorrupted fruit of the vine, Jesus underscored the absolute purity of His upcoming sacrifice. He was the spotless Lamb of God, completely free from the “leaven” of sin.

When He poured out that cup, He wasn’t just looking back at Egypt; He was looking forward to us. He established a covenant of grace and left us with a beautiful promise. Every time we remember Him through the fruit of the vine, we are reminded of His pure love, His unblemished sacrifice, and the glorious day when we will drink it anew with Him in the Kingdom of God.

Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the incredible depth and purity of Your Word. Thank You for Jesus, our true Passover Lamb, who was entirely without sin or corruption. As we reflect on the cup and the fruit of the vine, fill our hearts with overwhelming gratitude for the pure sacrifice made on our behalf. Cleanse our lives from the leaven of malice, pride, and sin, and help us to walk in sincerity and truth. We look forward with joyful hope to the day we will sit at Your heavenly table and celebrate in Your eternal Kingdom. Until then, keep us faithful and close to Your heart.
