Lessons on Responsibility and Heart Motives: Understanding the Story of Onan

The book of Genesis contains many raw, unfiltered accounts of human history. These narratives often expose the depth of human brokenness and the serious consequences of our choices. One such account is found in Genesis 38, which introduces us to a man named Onan. To fully understand his story and why his actions led to divine judgment, we must first look at the cultural and legal landscape of the ancient Near East.

The Law of the Levirate Marriage

In ancient biblical times, family lineage, inheritance, and protection for vulnerable family members were paramount. This gave rise to the practice known as Levirate marriage, a duty later codified in Deuteronomy 25:5-10. Under this tradition, if a married man died without leaving any children, his brother was required to marry the widow.

The purpose of this union was twofold. First, it ensured that the deceased brother’s name and lineage would continue. The firstborn son of this new marriage would legally carry on the dead brother’s family name and inherit his portion of the estate. Second, it provided vital economic and social security for the widow, who otherwise would be left destitute without a male heir to protect and support her.

The Sin of Onan

Following the death of Onan’s older brother, Er, Judah commanded Onan to fulfill this family obligation to his sister-in-law, Tamar. Genesis 38:9 records Onan’s response: “But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his. So whenever he went in to his brother’s wife, he would waste the semen on the ground, so as not to give offspring to his brother.”

Onan’s sin was not merely a physical act; it was a deeply rooted issue of the heart. He willingly took advantage of the privileges of the marital relationship for his own pleasure, yet he deliberately withheld the responsibility that came with it. By refusing to father a child for his brother, Onan acted out of pure selfishness. He denied his deceased brother a lineage, and he denied Tamar the protection and honor of motherhood. Furthermore, because a child would have diluted Onan’s own share of the inheritance, his actions were likely motivated by financial greed.

The Bible notes that what Onan did was wicked in the sight of the Lord, and because of his deceitful and selfish refusal to fulfill his duty, God took his life.

Living with a Giving Heart

The account of Onan serves as a sobering reminder of how God views selfishness and the manipulation of others for personal gain. God desires authenticity, faithfulness, and a willingness to care for those around us, even when it requires personal sacrifice. When we accept the benefits of our relationships, families, or communities but refuse to carry the weight of our responsibilities, we repeat the heart attitude of Onan.

True faith calls us to lay aside selfish ambitions and look out for the interests of others. It challenges us to honor our commitments and to act with integrity, knowing that God sees not just our outward actions, but the true motives of our hearts.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, You are a God of justice, order, and deep compassion. You care for the vulnerable, and You desire that we live with honesty and selflessness. Forgive us for the times we have pursued our own comfort and pleasure at the expense of our responsibilities to You and to others.

Purify our hearts, Lord. Remove any roots of greed, selfishness, or deceit that may lean us toward exploiting our relationships for personal gain. Give us the grace and the strength to fulfill our obligations with joy and integrity. Teach us to love sacrificially, to honor our commitments, and to live lives that truly reflect Your selfless love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
