START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Genesis 6:5
And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
How Great Man’s Wickedness: A Reflection on Genesis 6:5
In the days of Noah, the world reached a devastating tipping point. Scripture paints a sobering picture of humanity’s moral decay, culminating in the heavy words of Genesis 6:5:
“The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.”
This wasn’t a minor lapse in judgment or a temporary phase of rebellion. It was a total saturation of sin. When we look closer at Noah’s era, this deep-seated wickedness manifested in two distinct, destructive ways: unbridled sexual lust (Genesis 6:1-2) and pervasive violence (Genesis 6:11). The boundary lines God established for human flourishing and protection were completely erased, replaced by corruption and chaos.
The Mirror of Our Modern World
It is easy to look back at the pre-flood world and view it as an ancient anomaly. However, human wickedness and corruption have not changed. The human heart, apart from God’s grace, carries the exact same inclinations today.
Evil that society once could not have imagined—including sexual sins of all kinds and rampant violence—is now proudly displayed and evident throughout the world. We see it in our news feeds, our entertainment, and our communities.
This reality should not surprise us, but it should grieve us. Jesus himself warned us in Matthew 24:37-39 that the days leading up to the coming of the Son of Man would be just like the days of Noah—people completely indifferent to God, consumed by their own desires right up until the moment of judgment. Furthermore, Romans 1:32 reminds us of the progression of a culture in rebellion: not only do people practice these evils, but they actively approve of those who practice them.
The Hope Beyond the Flood
The story of Genesis 6 is a heavy mirror to look into, but it highlights our desperate need for a Savior. Just as God provided an ark of safety for Noah and his family, He has provided an eternal rescue for us through Jesus Christ
. In a world sinking under the weight of its own brokenness, we are called to live righteously, to stand firm in the truth, and to point others to the ultimate refuge.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We come before You today with humbled hearts, recognizing the truth of Your Word. As we look at the world around us, we see the painful reality that human nature has not changed. The wickedness, lust, and violence that grieved Your heart in the days of Noah are still so evident across the earth today. Lord, forgive us for the ways our own hearts are prone to wander.
We ask for Your strength to live as lights in a dark generation. Keep our hearts pure, protect our minds from the corruption of this culture, and give us the courage to stand for righteousness. We thank You for Jesus, our ultimate Ark of safety, who saves us from the judgment we deserve. May Your Holy Spirit guide us to share His urgent message of grace and truth with a world in desperate need.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
