And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.

Smoke from a Furnace: The Gravity of Holy Judgment

We live in a world that loves to talk about the grace of God but frequently chooses to ignore His holiness. We often prefer a sanitized version of the Scriptures—one that skips over the hard truths of accountability and divine justice. Yet, the Bible does not shy away from the reality of judgment. It forces us to look directly at the smoke.

In Genesis 19:28, we find a sobering image frozen in time:

“He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and toward all the land of the valley, and he looked and, behold, the smoke of the land went up like the smoke of a furnace.”

The “he” in this verse is Abraham. The morning after his desperate intercession for the cities of the plain [, Abraham stands on the heights of Hebron, looking down into the valley. There are no more cities. There is no more green valley. There is only a terrifying, dense column of ash rising into the sky like a massive industrial kiln.

A Timeless Example of Divine Justice

The smoke rising from the ashes of Sodom and Gomorrah was not just a historical event; it was a permanent monument of warning. Centuries later, Peter, one of Jesus’s disciples and a pioneer leader in the early church at Jerusalem, drew a direct line from Abraham’s horizon to our future.

In 2 Peter 2:6, 9, he writes that God condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, making them an example of what is going to happen to all who defy God. The New Testament repeats this warning with absolute clarity: the final day of God’s wrath is approaching, and His standards of absolute holiness have not shifted a single millimeter.

If God changed His mind about sin, Genesis 19 would be a historical relic. But because God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, the smoke of that furnace speaks directly to us. It tells us that God has a great wrath against sin.

The Balance of Judgment and Mercy

When we look at the smoke of the furnace, we see two profound truths about the character of God:

The Severity of Sin: Sin is never small to a holy God. The destruction was a response to an absolute saturation of pride, cruelty, sexual perversity, and unrepentant rebellion.
The Reality of Deliverance: Even amidst the fire and brimstone, God remembered mercy. Genesis 19:29 notes that when God destroyed the cities, He honored Abraham’s request and pulled Lot out of the destruction.

The cross of Jesus Christ is the ultimate convergence of these two realities. On the cross, the full, terrifying “smoke of the furnace”—the complete weight of God’s holy wrath against sin—was poured out. But it wasn’t poured out on us; it was borne by Jesus.

If you have ever doubted how seriously God views sin, look at the smoke of Sodom [. If you have ever doubted how much He desires to save you from that judgment, look at the cross of Calvary. A great wrath requires a great salvation, and in Christ, that is exactly what we have been given.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, You are a holy and righteous Judge, and Your eyes cannot look upon sin with approval. We humble ourselves before You today, acknowledging the weight and gravity of Your law. Forgive us for the times we have treated sin lightly or dismissed Your warnings of judgment.

Thank You for the sobering reminder of the smoke of the furnace, which drives us away from complacency and toward true repentance. We praise You that while Your wrath against defiance is real, Your mercy toward those who call upon You is infinite. Thank You for Jesus Christ, our great Savior, who took the fire of judgment upon Himself so that we might walk in perfect righteousness.

Awaken our hearts to the urgency of the hours we live in. Give us a passion to share the Good News of deliverance with a world that is unaware of the approaching day. Keep our feet firmly planted in Your grace, and let our lives bring glory to Your holy name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
