Wholehearted Devotion: What It Means to Truly Fear God

When we read the account of Abraham on Mount Moriah, it is easy to focus on the raw, heart-wrenching tension of the moment. A father stands over the altar, a knife raised to sacrifice the son of promise—the ultimate test of faith.

But the entire narrative pivots on the words spoken from heaven at that exact second:

“‘Do not lay your hand on the boy,’ he said. ‘Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.’” — Genesis 22:12

What does it actually mean to live with a faith that causes God to say, “Now I know”?

As Abraham began to perform the sacrifice (Genesis 22:10), it was evident that he was willing to do whatever God asked of him—even to give up what was most important to him. The Lord knew that Abraham was a God-fearing man, a man who had the highest reverence for the Lord, took God’s word seriously, and honored Him completely. Abraham’s main concern was to do God’s will.

Redefining the “Fear of God”

In modern language, “fear” implies terror or a desire to run away. But Abraham’s fear of the Lord was rooted in awe, profound reverence, and deep love. To fear God means that His voice is the ultimate authority in your life.

Abraham had spent decades learning that God’s covenant promises were ironclad. Even when the instruction seemed contradictory to the promise of a future through Isaac, Abraham’s faith did not waver. He figured that whatever God commanded must be right, operating under the absolute belief that God was capable of doing the impossible—even raising his son from the dead (Hebrews 11:17-19).

Valuing the Giver Above the Gift

The ultimate proof of Abraham’s reverence was that he withheld nothing. Isaac was a miraculous gift, the embodiment of everything Abraham had hoped for. Yet, when tested, Abraham proved that he valued the Giver above the gift. He refused to let a blessing become an idol.

When we hold our blessings with an open hand, we position ourselves to witness God’s miraculous provision. The moment Abraham stopped, he looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. God provided the substitute.

This exchange on Mount Moriah serves as a beautiful shadow of what was to come thousands of years later. God would give His own Son, Jesus Christ, to die on our behalf—the ultimate, flawless provision for our salvation.

Living with an Open Hand

The question Abraham’s story leaves with us is a challenging one: Are we willing to walk in obedience to God no matter what?

True devotion is found in daily surrender. It means waking up each morning and deciding that God’s will matters more than our comfort, our plans, or our most tightly held blessings. When we live with that level of reverence, we can experience firsthand the peace of trusting Jehovah Jireh—the Lord who sees and provides.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, Almighty God, like Abraham, we want to be people who honor You completely. Forgive us for the times we have held onto Your blessings tighter than we have held onto You. Teach us what it truly means to fear Your name—to live in deep awe, holy reverence, and radical obedience to Your word. We lay our plans, our families, our futures, and our deepest desires at Your feet today. We trust that Your plans are good and that You will always provide exactly what we need. May our lives show a wholehearted devotion that honors You above all else. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
