And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.

The Faith to Return: How Genesis 22:5 Points Us straight to the Cross

We often read the story of Abraham and Isaac on Mount Moriah with a sense of dread. God asks Abraham to sacrifice the very son of promise—the child he waited decades to hold. Yet, tucked away in the opening verses of Genesis 22 is a single, world-shaking declaration that flips the entire narrative from a tragedy into a triumphant masterpiece of faith.

In Genesis 22:5, Abraham tells his servants:

“Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”

Notice that he didn’t say, “I will come back.” He said, “We will come back.”

This statement reveals the staggering depth of Abraham’s faith. He didn’t know how God was going to do it, but he knew God’s character. Let’s unpack the beautiful layers of this ultimate test of faith and see how it points directly to Jesus Christ.

Standing on the Logic of God’s Promises

Abraham’s confidence wasn’t wishful thinking or denial; it was rooted entirely in God’s unbreakable covenant. Years earlier, God explicitly told him:

“It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned” (Genesis 21:12).

Abraham stood firmly on a logical conclusion: If God promised a lineage through Isaac, and God cannot lie, then even if Isaac dies on that altar, God must raise him from the dead. The New Testament confirms this exact thought process in Hebrews 11:19, noting that Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead—and in a manner of speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death.

Isaac as a Shadow of Christ

This profound moment on the mountain was a beautifully choreographed foreshadowing of the Gospel. Isaac acts as a “type” or symbol of Jesus Christ in two powerful ways:

The Voluntary Submission: Isaac was not a small child; he was likely a strong young man capable of carrying the wood for his own sacrifice up a mountain. Yet, just as Abraham willingly offered his son, Isaac willingly yielded to his father (Genesis 22:16). This mirrors Jesus, who said of His own life in John 10:18: “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.”
The Foreshadowing of Resurrection: When the angel of the Lord stopped Abraham’s hand (Genesis 22:12), Isaac was effectively delivered from death. Three days after Abraham received the command—three days of walking under the assumption that his son was to die—Isaac “returned” alive. This directly points to the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who walked out of the grave on the third day to secure our eternal life.

Trusting God in the “Even If”

Like Abraham, we often face moments where God’s commands or our circumstances seem to completely contradict His promises. We experience seasons where we are asked to surrender the things we love most.

The lesson of Mount Moriah is that we can trust God’s heart even when we cannot trace His hand. If Abraham could look at a sacrificial knife and still confidently say “We will come back,” we can look at our darkest trials and say, “My God will provide.”

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your unwavering faithfulness and for always keeping Your promises. Forgive us for the moments when our sight fails and our trust wavers. Grant us the resolute faith of Abraham—a faith that looks at impossible situations and declares Your power to restore and revive.

We thank You for the ultimate sacrifice on Calvary, where You did not spare Your own Son, Jesus, but gave Him up for us all. Help us to willingly lay our own “Isaacs” on the altar, trusting that whatever we surrender to You is safe in Your hands. May we live with the confident assurance that because Christ rose from the dead, we too will overcome. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.
