When We Try to Help God: The High Price of Control and Deceit

We have all been there. We see a situation going sideways, or we worry that a promise isn’t going to manifest the way it should, and a quiet whisper echoes in our mind: “If I don’t handle this myself, it’s not going to happen.”

In Genesis 27:6-17, we witness a masterclass in what happens when we let that whisper take the driver’s seat.

The Blueprint of a Scheme

The passage opens with Rebekah pulling her younger son, Jacob, into a corner. She had just overheard her husband, Isaac, preparing to give his patriarchal blessing to their eldest son, Esau. But Rebekah remembered what God had spoken before the twins were ever born—that the older would serve the younger (Genesis 25:22-23).

Knowing God’s ultimate purpose, Rebekah made a catastrophic pivot: she decided to help God out using human methods.

Instead of trusting the Sovereign Creator to handle her husband’s spiritual blindness, she hatched a plan of complex deception. She instructed Jacob to get two goats, prepared a meal to mimic Esau’s wild game, and went so far as to cover Jacob’s smooth skin with hairy goatskins and dress him in his brother’s clothes.

Jacob hesitated, but not because his conscience was pricked—he was simply afraid of getting caught and bringing a curse on himself instead of a blessing. Rebekah, fully committed to her control, boldly claimed, “Let the curse fall on me, my son. Just do what I say” (Genesis 27:13).

Losing Sight of the Blessing

Rebekah and Jacob’s primary mistake was losing sight of the true purpose of God’s blessing. God does not hand out inheritance simply to grant material prosperity or familial dominance. The core reason for His blessing is to develop godly, honest people who trust, obey, and do what is right.

By resorting to lies, manipulation, and panic, mother and son acted as practical atheists in that moment, assuming that God was too weak or too slow to fulfill His word without their sin.

The High Cost of Human Control

Did Jacob end up getting the blessing? Yes. But God’s sovereign plan was fulfilled in spite of their deceit, not because it was the preferred path.

The immediate and long-term consequences of their choice were devastating:

Fractured Family: Esau was filled with a murderous rage, completely destroying the brotherhood.
Painful Exile: Jacob was forced to flee for his life to Haran, changing from a cozy home dweller to a wandering fugitive.
The Mother’s Price: Rebekah paid the highest price of all. When she sent Jacob away, she told him it would just be for “a few days” until Esau cooled down (Genesis 27:44). In reality, she never saw her beloved son Jacob again before she died.

When we try to force God’s hand through deceit, shortcuts, or manipulation, we always end up breaking the things we love the most. True peace never grows from the seeds of control.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Forgive us for the times we treat Your promises with panic. Like Rebekah and Jacob, we confess that we often try to micro-manage our lives, our families, and our futures out of fear that You won’t move fast enough or in the way we expect. We confess where we have chosen manipulation over manipulation-free waiting, and control over true faith.

Lord, align our hearts with the real goal of Your blessing: to make us holy, honest, and upright people who reflect Your truth. Teach us to sit quietly in your sovereignty. Grant us the courage to trust You when circumstances look wrong, knowing that You do not need our deception to accomplish Your perfect will. We surrender our timelines and our schemes to You today.
