When We Try to Do God’s Work the Wrong Way: Lessons from Genesis 27:1

We have all been tempted to take matters into our own hands. When we feel like a situation is slipping out of control, or when we worry that God’s promises might not come to pass on our timeline, human nature whispers a dangerous alternative: manipulation.

In Genesis 27, we are invited into the home of the patriarch Isaac, and what we find is a striking cautionary tale about a family attempting to secure God’s blessing through human scheming.

The Setup: A Divided Household

The chapter opens with a sobering reality: “When Isaac was old and his eyes were so dim that he could not see…” (Genesis 27:1). Isaac, sensing that his time on earth is winding down, prepares to pass on the patriarchal, covenantal blessing. However, instead of consulting God or honoring the prophecy given to his wife before the twins were born—that the older would serve the younger (Genesis 25:23)—Isaac lets his personal preferences rule. He favored Esau, his oldest, primarily because of his appetite for wild game. Isaac attempts to bestow the blessing secretly, deliberately acting against God’s revealed sovereignty.

But Isaac wasn’t the only one scheming:

Rebekah overhears the plan and immediately resorts to deception rather than trusting God to fulfill His promise.
Jacob goes along with the ruse, disguising his voice and skin to trick his blind father into giving him the blessing.

Every single person in this household tried to get God’s blessing in the wrong way. Isaac favored Esau against God’s will, while Rebekah and Jacob used lies and manipulation for their personal interests and benefit.

The Cost of Human Scheming

This family’s actions went directly against the good intentions of God’s covenant. Did Jacob end up with the blessing? Yes, because God is sovereign and His purposes ultimately cannot be thwarted. But the family paid a devastating price for their shortcuts:

Trust was shattered within the home.
Esau was consumed by a murderous rage toward his brother.
Jacob had to flee for his life, leaving behind the mother who had fiercely protected him, never to see her again.

Trying to do God’s work in the wrong ways makes His purpose unclear and always hurts those involved. When we use dishonesty, manipulation, or fleshly striving to achieve what we think is “good” or “deserved,” we leave a wake of broken relationships and unnecessary pain.

Trusting the God of the Covenant

The beautiful, overriding truth of Genesis 27 is that human failure cannot cancel divine destiny. God, in His infinite grace, still used this messy, fractured family to carry out His redemption plan.

But how much better is it to walk in obedience? We do not need to lie, manipulate, or force outcomes to secure the good things God has promised us. We don’t have to operate out of fear or spiritual blindness. God’s hands are fully capable of orchestrating His will without our deceptive shortcuts.

Let us learn from Isaac’s household. Let us choose to trust God’s timing, honor His methods, and wait on Him to move.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we look at the life of Isaac and his family and recognize how easily our own hearts can fall into the trap of manipulation and control. Forgive us for the times we have tried to do Your work using the world’s broken methods. Deliver us from the spiritual neglect and impatience that cause us to push ahead of Your timing. Give us the grace to trust Your sovereignty, even when the path ahead seems unclear. Help us to put first things first, protecting our families and relationships from the pain of deceit. We place our future, our blessings, and our hopes entirely in Your faithful hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
