IS ANYTHING TOO HARD FOR THE LORD? / GENESIS 18:13-14

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 18:13-14

And the Lord said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old? 14 Is any thing too hard for the Lord? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

Is Anything Too Hard for the Lord? Trusting God’s Power in Impossible Seasons

We have all been there. You look at your bank account, a broken relationship, a medical report, or a dream that has been deferred for years, and your mind whispers a single word: Impossible.

When circumstances overwhelm us, our vision narrows. We begin to view our problems through the lens of human limitation. But thousands of years ago, on a dusty plains ridge in Mamre, God asked a foundational question that echoes down through history to meet us in our mess today: “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” (Genesis 18:14).

The Context of the Question

To appreciate the weight of this question, we have to look at the couple who first heard it: Abraham and Sarah. God had promised them a son, a biological heir from whom nations would rise. Years passed. Decades rolled by. By the time God reiterated the promise, Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 99. Physically speaking, the ship had sailed. The biological clock hadn’t just run out; it had crumbled to dust.

When Sarah overheard the Lord saying she would give birth by the following year, she laughed. It wasn’t a laugh of joy; it was a laugh of weary disbelief.

In response, the narrative captures a powerful moment of divine confrontation: “And the Lord said to Abraham, ‘Why did Sarah laugh, saying, “Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?” Is anything too hard for the Lord?'” (Genesis 18:13-14). God did not reprimand her with anger. Instead, He exposed the root of all human doubt by pointing directly to His own limitless nature.

Moving From Human Limits to Divine Logic

God wants us to understand a fundamental truth about His character: He has the sovereign power to accomplish exactly what He has promised. He does not operate under the constraints of time, biology, or economics.

Centuries after Sarah laughed in the tent, Jesus stood before His disciples and underscored this exact reality. Reflecting on human limitations regarding salvation and life, Jesus looked at them and emphasized: “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).

When we say a situation is impossible, we are correct—if we are relying only on human strength. But when we bring God into the equation, the word “impossible” loses all its power.

What Are You Facing Today?

Your “impossible” situation might look different than Abraham and Sarah’s, but the question remains identical:

  • Is that fractured marriage too hard for the Lord to restore?
  • Is that terminal diagnosis too hard for the Lord to heal?
  • Is that deeply rooted addiction too hard for the Lord to break?
  • Is that financial crisis too hard for the Lord to turn around?

The rhetorical answer is a resounding no. Human delays are not divine denials. What feels like a dead end to us is merely the perfect staging ground for God to reveal His glory. If He can speak the universe into existence, guide a wandering nation through a parted sea, and raise Jesus from the grave, He can handle the burden weighing on your heart today. Trust His heart, lean on His promises, and remember that He is always right on time.

A Closing Prayer for Faith and Assurance

Hexavenly Father,

We come before You today acknowledging that You are the Sovereign Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. Forgive us for the times we have looked at our mountains and forgotten the power of the One who moves them. Forgive us for letting our doubts outshine our faith.

Lord, we lift up the areas of our lives that feel completely impossible right now. We lay our brokenness, our waiting seasons, and our anxieties at Your feet. We choose to anchor our souls in Your truth rather than our changing circumstances. We declare today that absolutely nothing is too hard for You.

Strengthen our hearts to trust Your timing and Your perfect plan. Expand our vision to see past our human limitations, and give us the peace that surpasses all understanding while we wait for Your breakthrough. We praise You because You are faithful, You are able, and Your promises are always true.

In the mighty and matchless name of Jesus, Amen.
