Above It Stood the Lord: Trusting God in the In-Between

We have all experienced seasons of waiting, transition, or uncertainty. Perhaps you are stepping into a new job, navigating an unexpected life change, or fleeing a painful situation. In those moments, it is easy to feel entirely isolated—wondering if God has forgotten His plans for you.

If that is where you find yourself today, the story of Jacob in Genesis 28 offers profound comfort.

The Context: A Man on the Run

Before we look at the beautiful promise in Genesis 28:13–15, we have to look at how Jacob got here. Genesis 27 ends with Jacob fleeing his home in absolute chaos. He had just deceived his father and cheated his brother, Esau, out of his birthright. Now, Esau wants him dead.

Penniless, alone, and sleeping in the wilderness with a literal stone for a pillow, Jacob was at his absolute lowest. He had no security and no guarantee of a future. Yet, it was in this exact place of brokenness and vulnerability that heaven reached down to earth.

The Dream: Above It Stood the Lord

As Jacob slept, he saw a vision of a stairway stretching between earth and heaven, with angels ascending and descending on it. But the most breathtaking part of the vision is captured in Genesis 28:13–15:

“There above it stood the Lord, and he said: ‘I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth… All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.'”

Notice that God did not wait for Jacob to get his life perfectly together before showing up. Above it stood the Lord—sovereign, constant, and ready to pour out grace.

Three Pillars of God’s Covenant With You

In this profound encounter, God passes the historic Abrahamic covenant directly down to Jacob. For believers today, this passage highlights three beautiful pillars of God’s character that we can anchor our souls to:

His Sovereign Presence: God tells Jacob, “I am with you”. You do not have to chase God down; He meets you in the quiet, lonely in-between spaces of your life.
His Divine Guidance & Protection: The Lord promises to “watch over you wherever you go”. Whether you are stepping onto a new path or walking through a dark valley of grief, His protective hand is shielding your life.
His Unfailing Completion: God concludes with a powerful guarantee: “I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you”. What God starts, He finishes. He is entirely faithful to His word.

Standing on the Promises

When Jacob woke up, he was filled with awe and realized, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it”.

Like Jacob, you might feel like you are sitting in a barren desert right now. But look up. The Lord stands above your circumstances. He is working behind the scenes, bridging the gap between your deepest needs and His abundant mercy through Jesus Christ. Take comfort today knowing that His presence goes before you, His protection surrounds you, and His promises will never fail you.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that You are a God who meets us in our lowest and most uncertain seasons. Forgive us for the times we look at our surroundings and forget that You are right here beside us. We thank You that You stand sovereignly above our past mistakes, our current anxieties, and our unknown futures.

We claim Your promises today. Thank You for Your constant presence, Your watchful protection, and Your guiding hand. Give us the peace to trust that You will completely finish the good work You have started in our lives. When the path ahead feels lonely, remind our hearts that You will never leave us nor forsake us.
