THE GLORY OF THE LORD / EXODUS 24:15-17

(KJV) Exodus 24:15-17

The Glory of the Lord is a radiant, unapproachable light that reveals His absolute holiness, splendor, and pure being.

When we read Exodus 24:15-17, we find Moses climbing Mount Sinai, wrapped in a thick cloud of divine presence. For six days, the cloud covers the mountain, and on the seventh day, God calls to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. To the Israelites waiting below, the sight of the glory of the Lord looks like a “devouring fire” on the mountaintop.

Enveloped in Splendor

The word “glory” translates to Kavod in Hebrew, meaning weight, wealth, or absolute majesty. God’s glory is not just an idea; it is a tangible, visible manifestation of His infinite magnificence. As highlighted in Exodus 40:34 and 1 Timothy 6:16, this glory is revealed as an approachable yet blinding light. It is the outward display of God’s perfect character—His beauty, purity, and power.

Nearness Meets Holiness

For the children of Israel, looking up from the base of the mountain, the glory looked like a terrifying, all-consuming fire. This fire symbolized two distinct things:

• His Holiness: A consuming fire that burns away sin and pure compromise.
• His Faithfulness: A brilliant beacon reassuring Israel that the covenant came from a living God, not just human imagination.

While the people watched the consuming fire from a safe distance, Moses was invited into the very center of it.

From the Mountain to the Heart

The same Shekinah glory that settled on Mount Sinai is what John the Apostle speaks of when he writes that Jesus came and “tabernacled” among us. Today, through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we don’t have to stand at the base of a physical mountain in fear. Through Christ, we are invited directly into the light of His presence every single day.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We stand in absolute awe of Your magnificent glory. You are the God who clothes Himself in unapproachable light, whose holiness burns like a devouring fire, yet You are the very same God who invites us into Your presence. Lord, let the light of Your face shine upon our lives today. Consume everything within us that does not honor You, and let Your splendor be revealed through our words, our actions, and our love. Thank You for making a way for us to know You intimately. Draw us closer to the cloud of Your presence today.
