(KJV) Exodus 21:2
If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.
The Law of Grace in an Imperfect World: Reflecting on Exodus 21:2
When we open the pages of the Old Testament and encounter passages regarding slavery, it can be deeply uncomfortable. In Exodus 21:2, God outlines the regulations for a Hebrew servant: “If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything.”
At first glance, we might wonder why a holy and just God didn’t instantly abolish this practice. But a closer look reveals a beautiful truth about God’s character: He meets humanity exactly where they are, implementing boundaries of grace to protect the vulnerable while continually pointing them toward a higher standard of love.
Meeting Humanity in the Mess
God did not invent slavery or polygamy; these were deeply entrenched cultural evils of the ancient world. Because human hearts were slow and resistant to fully understanding His perfect design (Matthew 19:8), God introduced revolutionary regulations to curb cruelty.
Unlike the surrounding ancient nations—where slaves were treated as mere property with no rights—God’s law introduced unprecedented dignity and legal protection:
- A Limit on Hardship: Servitude was capped at six years. The seventh year brought mandatory freedom.
- A Journey of Grace: This law transformed a permanent, hopeless cycle of debt into a temporary system of rehabilitation.
- Protection Over Possession: In subsequent passages (like Leviticus 25:39-40), God explicitly commands that these servants be treated as hired workers, not property.
God’s regulations injected respect and mercy into an inherently broken human institution, proving that His grace can penetrate even the darkest cultural norms.
The Path to a Higher Standard
While the Old Testament laws mitigated harm, they were never God’s ultimate blueprint for human relationships. They were stepping stones.
In the New Testament, Jesus brings the true fulfillment of the law, establishing a radically higher standard built on sacrificial love:
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” — John 13:34
Under Christ, the artificial barriers we build between social classes, economic statuses, and races are completely dismantled (Colossians 3:22). We are no longer defined by systemic hierarchies, but by our shared identity as children of God.
Carrying Grace into Our Modern World
Exodus 21:2 reminds us that God is patient with our slow progress, yet He never compromises His desire for justice. If God cared enough to protect the rights and dignity of a servant in the ancient wilderness, how much more does He call us to stand up for the vulnerable, the marginalized, and the broken in our communities today?
We live in a world that is still deeply fractured by unfair systems and hard hearts. As followers of Christ, our mission is to reflect the same progressive grace God showed Israel—constantly pushing past cultural norms to treat every individual with the profound respect they deserve.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We thank You that You are a God of justice, mercy, and immense patience. Thank You for meeting us in our imperfections and for never leaving us there. Forgive us for the times our hearts are slow to understand Your perfect law of love.
Give us eyes to see the vulnerable around us and the courage to extend Your grace into the broken spaces of our world. Help us to live out the higher standard set by Jesus, loving others selflessly and honoring the divine dignity in every person we meet.
In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
