For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

Living Beyond the Shadows: Understanding Colossians 3:6

In our modern world, we love to focus on love, grace, and second chances. And rightly so—the heart of the Christian faith is built on the overwhelming, scandalous grace of God. But if we only read the verses that make us feel warm and cozy, we miss the full picture of who God is and what He is calling us out of.

In Colossians 3:6, the Apostle Paul drops a sobering, heavyweight truth that we cannot afford to look past:

“Because of these things, the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience.” (Colossians 3:6, NKJV)

It is a short sentence, but it carries an eternal weight. To truly understand what Paul means by “because of these things,” we have to look just one verse prior. In Colossians 3:5, he lists the behaviors we are told to put to death: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness (which is idolatry).

Paul isn’t just giving us a moral checklist; he is showing us a baseline truth about the character of God.

Why Wrath Matters

The mention of “the wrath of God” makes many people uncomfortable. We tend to equate wrath with human anger—uncontrolled, vindictive, and malicious. But God’s wrath is entirely different. It is His holy, righteous, and settled opposition to sin and evil. Because God is perfectly good, He cannot remain neutral toward things that destroy the people He loves and desecrate the world He made.

When we choose to walk in the “things” of our old nature—living in disobedience—we are aligning ourselves with the very things that break God’s heart and invite His judgment.

The Good News Hidden in the Warning

The warning of Colossians 3:6 is stark, but it serves a magnificent purpose: it highlights the magnitude of our rescue.

As believers, we aren’t left under the threat of that coming wrath. Colossians 3:7 reminds us that “you once walked in them when you lived in them.” Notice the past tense. Through Jesus Christ, our identity has completely changed. We have been moved from the category of “sons of disobedience” to beloved children of God. Jesus took the wrath we deserved upon Himself at the cross so that we could walk in absolute freedom.

Knowing what we have been saved from shouldn’t make us complacent; it should ignite a passion within us to live lives that honor Him. It calls us to actively strip off the old garments of sin and put on the new nature Christ provides.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We come before You today humbled by Your holiness and deeply grateful for Your grace. Your Word reminds us that Your wrath against sin is real, because You are a just and holy God who cannot look upon evil. Lord, let this truth sober our hearts and give us a healthy, reverent fear of stepping back into the things You have rescued us from.

Forgive us for the times we treat sin lightly or coddle the very behaviors that broke Your heart on the cross. We thank You, Jesus, that You endured the wrath we deserved so that we could receive the righteousness we could never earn. By Your Holy Spirit, give us the strength today to put to death our old ways, to choose obedience, and to reflect Your light to a world in need of Your saving grace.

In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.
