START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Colossians 2:23
Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body: not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.
Beyond Outward Rules: True Restraint vs. Sensual Indulgence
In Colossians 2:23, the Apostle Paul exposes a profound truth about human nature and religious legalism: “These rules indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.”
We live in a world obsessed with outward metrics. In many religious circles, it is easy to default to a checklist of external restrictions—focusing heavily on what we eat, drink, or touch. But Paul issues a sobering warning: outward rules are completely worthless when it comes to capturing and changing the desires of the human heart. They treat the symptoms, but they leave the underlying sickness completely untouched.
The Deception of “Personal Choice”
The real danger arises when we misunderstand Christian freedom. Some attempt to misuse Paul’s critique of empty legalism to claim complete immunity from moral standards. They argue that because we are free from rigid, man-made rituals, we are also free to consume whatever we want under the guise of “personal choice” or “conscience.”
While matters of food or basic physical customs go in and out of the body without altering the soul, the battleground of media, entertainment, and modern culture is fundamentally different. Entertainment filled with sexual imagery, explicit language, and compromising humor does not pass harmlessly through us. These things bypass the physical digestive tract and head straight for the mind and spirit.
When we willingly expose ourselves to ungodly images, we are not practicing Christian liberty; we are feeding sensual indulgence. God’s Word addresses these issues of moral purity with absolute seriousness (Colossians 3:5; Ephesians 5:3-7) because what enters our eyes and ears shapes our inner spiritual reality.
Pursuing True Holiness
As Paul pivots into Colossians 3, he shifts our gaze away from useless outward legalism and points us toward true Christian holiness. Authentic transformation does not happen by merely locking our physical bodies in a cage of rules; it happens by allowing the Holy Spirit to renew our minds.
True holiness requires:
- Moral purity that guards the gates of the mind.
- Spiritual wholeness found in Christ rather than worldly distractions.
- Active separation from evil and an intentional dedication to God’s purposes.
We are not called to a life of behavior management, but to a life of radical internal transformation. Let us stop relying on empty rules to keep us clean, and instead fix our eyes on Jesus, allowing His Spirit to conquer our fleshly desires from the inside out.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We come before You recognizing that our own willpower and self-imposed rules are powerless to change our hearts. Forgive us for the times we have settled for an outward appearance of wisdom while allowing our inner thoughts and desires to wander away from You. Guard our hearts and minds against the subtle traps of sensual indulgence.
Give us the discernment to reject entertainment and influences that corrupt our spirits, and grant us the strength to pursue true moral purity. Renew our minds today. May our lives be marked by genuine holiness, deep spiritual wholeness, and an unshakeable dedication to Your kingdom and purposes. We ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
