The Upside-Down Kingdom: Discovering True Greatness in Luke 22:24-30

We live in a world obsessed with metrics. We measure success by job titles, the number of people we manage, academic degrees, social media influence, and the size of our bank accounts. From a worldly perspective, greatness is about standing above the crowd, being served, and commanding authority.

But inside the Kingdom of God, everything is turned upside down.

In Luke 22:24–30, we witness a jarring contrast between worldly ambition and divine humility. The scene is the Last Supper. Jesus is preparing to face the cross, carrying the weight of the salvation of humanity. Yet, even in this sacred, somber moment, a dispute arises among the disciples as to which of them was considered to be the greatest.

Instead of rebuking them with anger, Jesus uses this moment to redefine greatness forever. His answer challenges us to look inward and ask ourselves: Whose definition of greatness are we living for?

Position vs. Character

Jesus tells His disciples, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that.” (Luke 22:25-26).

Jesus directly addresses our human tendency to equate greatness with position, office, power, or success. He makes it clear that true greatness is not a matter of outward recognition, but of inward humility in spirit and heart. It is not proven by great accomplishments, but by who we are in relation to Him.

True greatness requires us to shift our focus from external status to internal transformation. We are called to be great in the areas that matter to God:

Faith and Humility (Matthew 18:3-4)
Godly Character and Wisdom
Self-Control, Patience, and Love (Galatians 5:22-23)

These traits reflect the very heart of Christ, who loved righteousness and perfectly embodied the fruits of the Spirit.

The Master Who Serves

To ground this radical concept, Jesus poses a question: “For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.” (Luke 22:27).

If anyone had the right to sit at the table and demand service, it was Jesus. He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Yet, He chose the posture of a servant. True greatness is seen in the person who expresses their love for Christ by submitting to Him, actively serving others, and willingly accepting a place as the least important.

When we reserve our lives for His purposes—however and wherever God chooses to place us—we align ourselves with His vision. In God’s view, the greatest in His kingdom are simply those with the greatest love for Him and the deepest faithfulness to His Word.

The Reward of Faithfulness

Jesus concludes by honoring the disciples for standing by Him in His trials, promising them a place in His kingdom where they will eat, drink, and judge the twelve tribes of Israel.

This reminds us that remaining deeply devoted to Christ and free from evil will always bear fruit in God’s work. Our responsibility isn’t to manufacture a platform or force our way into leadership; it is to faithfully make the most of the gifts and opportunities He has already given us to serve Him and others (Romans 12:3-8).

Let us stop chasing the world’s standard of success. Instead, let us look to Jesus, find joy in serving, and seek the true greatness that comes from a quiet, humble, and deeply devoted heart.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Forgive us for the times we have chased the world’s definition of greatness. Forgive us for seeking titles, recognition, and power rather than a heart of service. Lord, we ask that You cultivate true, inward humility within our spirits today.

Help us to love what You love and hate what You hate. Teach us to be great in faith, patience, wisdom, and love. Give us the grace to willingly take the posture of a servant, just as Jesus did, using whatever gifts and opportunities You have given us to lift up others and glorify Your name. We reserve our lives for Your purposes, trusting that our true identity and reward are found safely in You.
