RECONCILE TO HIMSELF ALL THINGS / COLOSSIANS 1:20

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Colossians 1:20

And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

Reconciled to Himself: Understanding the Scope of Christ’s Peace

Have you ever looked at the world around you—or even at your own life—and felt a deep ache for things to be made right? We live in a world fractured by broken relationships, personal failures, and a creation that seems to groan under the weight of decay.

In Colossians 1:20, the Apostle Paul delivers a breathtaking promise that addresses this exact ache: Christ came “to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.”

This is a monumental declaration. But what does it actually mean for us today, and how does this universal peace apply to our individual lives?

What Does It Mean to Be Reconciled?

In a Biblical sense, “to be reconciled” means to be restored to a right relationship with God. It implies that a separation once existed, but a bridge has now been built.

When the first humans sinned, a catastrophic shift occurred. The perfect spiritual harmony between God and people was destroyed. But the damage didn’t stop there—disorder, frustration, and corruption entered into the entire physical universe (Romans 8:19-22). We became, by nature, estranged from our Creator.

When Jesus died on the cross, He didn’t just perform a moral example; He poured out His blood to make peace possible. Through His sacrifice, He restored the opportunity for a personal relationship with God through faith (Colossians 1:22; 2 Corinthians 5:18).

A Cosmic Scope, A Personal Choice

It is easy to misinterpret the phrase “reconcile to himself all things” as a blanket statement meaning everyone is automatically saved. However, Scripture paints a different picture:

  • Salvation is a choice: This passage does not mean that Christ has automatically saved all people. Everyone still must choose for themselves whether to accept or reject that relationship.
  • The reality of rejection: Those who reject Christ remain enemies of God (Romans 2:4-10) and face an eternity separated from Him.
  • The requirement of faith: Only those who accept Christ’s forgiveness and yield their lives to Him are truly reconciled to God and saved.

Jesus paid a debt of cosmic proportions, but the gift must be personally received.

The Already and the Not Yet

Christ’s work on the cross did something extraordinary: He restored the harmony—potentially—of the physical world and everything in the universe (Colossians 1:16-18). He claimed authority over every square inch of creation.

Right now, we live in the tension of the “already” and the “not yet.” Through faith, our hearts can experience the “already” of perfect peace with God today. However, the full, visible restoration of the physical world will occur only after Christ returns to earth at the end of history (Romans 8:21; Revelation 20–21). Until then, we walk by faith, anchoring our hope in the blood shed on the cross.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we marvel at the scope of Your love and the magnitude of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. Thank You for making peace possible when we were completely helpless and separated from You by our sin. Lord, I pray for anyone reading this who has not yet accepted Your forgiveness. Soften their heart today to yield to Jesus and experience true reconciliation.

For those of us who know You, help us to live as ambassadors of this peace in a broken world. We look forward with eager hope to the day when You will fully restore all of creation. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
