And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

The Place Called the Skull: Understanding the Power of Luke 23:33

“And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.” — Luke 23:33

There is a profound, sobering weight in the geography of our salvation. Luke takes us directly to a specific destination outside the city walls of Jerusalem—a place known simply as “The Skull.” Taken from the Greek word translated into the Latin calvaria, this is the root of the word Calvary, a name forever etched into human history.

Why was it called the Skull? Scholars still debate the reasons today. Some believe the hill itself resembled a human skull; others suggest it was named for the grim executions that took place there. But regardless of the origin of its name, the spiritual significance is unmistakable. Jesus was driven out of the holy city to die in a place associated with death, carrying the heavy burden of humanity’s brokenness.

They Crucified Him

The words are sparse, but the reality is staggering: “There they crucified him.”

The death of Jesus Christ on the cross is not just a tragic historical event; it is the core and foundation of God’s plan to restore His relationship with humanity. From the moment sin entered the world, a deep chasm opened between us and a holy God. Our offenses and self-will broke the bond we were created to enjoy with our Creator.

But God, in His infinite mercy, did not leave us stranded in our brokenness.

As 1 Corinthians 1:23-24 reminds us, Christ crucified may be a stumbling block to some and foolishness to others, but to those who are called, He is the power and wisdom of God. Consider the beautiful, exchange that took place at Calvary:

The Perfect Sacrifice: Jesus, who lived a flawless life and had never sinned, willingly died in the place of sinful humanity.
The Full Penalty Paid: His death provided the ultimate sacrifice, completely satisfying the requirement for justice and paying the full penalty for all sin (Romans 3:25).
The Defeat of Darkness: On that lonely hill, the enemy’s work and purpose were decisively defeated. Death did not win; it was swallowed up in victory.

Receiving the Gift

Because of what happened at the Skull, the invitation is now open to everyone. Forgiveness and eternal life are not earned by our own good deeds, but received by faith.

When we accept Christ’s sacrifice and turn to God in wholehearted repentance—admitting our shortcomings, turning away from our own self-governed ways, and surrendering our lives to Jesus’ leadership—we are completely made new. The barrier of sin is dropped, and true relationship with God begins.

The cross at the Skull was an instrument of execution, but through Jesus, it became the gateway to eternal life.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We come before You today humbled by the reality of Calvary. Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, to the place called the Skull to bear the shame, pain, and weight of our sins. We recognize that His sacrifice was the perfect and final payment required to bring us back into relationship with You.

Lord, we repent of the ways we have walked in our own strength and self-will. We surrender our lives freshly to the leadership of Jesus Christ. Thank You for the promise of full forgiveness, the defeat of darkness in our lives, and the gift of eternal life. May we live every day in the power and gratitude of the cross. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.
