Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

The Sword and the Sacrifice: Understanding Irony in Luke 22:36

In Luke 22:36, Jesus gives a startling command to His disciples: “Let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one”. For a ministry built on loving enemies, turning the other cheek, and demonstrating radical humility, this sudden pivot to weapon ownership feels jarring.

Is Jesus suddenly abandoning His message of peace to endorse an armed rebellion? Not at all. When we look closer at the context, we see that Jesus is likely using deep irony—words with a double meaning—to prepare His followers for a stark new reality.

A Radical Shift in Ministry

To understand what Jesus meant, we have to look at what He says immediately before and after this verse. In Luke 22:35, He reminds them of their earlier missions:

“When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” They answered, “Nothing.”

In those early days, the disciples traveled under a blanket of divine hospitality and public favor. But the hours leading to the cross changed everything. The atmosphere was turning hostile. By telling them to buy a sword, Jesus wasn’t calling for a physical fight; He was using a stark figure of speech to warn them that the days of easy travel were over. Suffering, rejection, and intense spiritual opposition were on the horizon.

The Misunderstanding of the Disciples

As they so often did, the disciples took His words entirely literally. In Luke 22:38, they eagerly pull out their gear: “See, Lord, here are two swords.”

Jesus responds with a sigh: “That is enough.”

Logically, two swords are completely useless for defending a group of eleven men against a Roman cohort or a temple guard. “That is enough” didn’t mean two swords were a sufficient arsenal; it meant “enough of this conversation.” He was cutting off their misunderstanding.

We see the ultimate proof of this just hours later in the Garden of Gethsemane. When Peter actually draws one of those swords and cuts off the ear of the high priest’s servant, Jesus immediately rebukes him. He heals the man’s ear and commands Peter to put the weapon away, proving once and for all that His kingdom is not advanced by earthly violence.

Carrying the Cross, Not the Sword

Immediately after the sword comment, Jesus quotes the prophet Isaiah: “And He was numbered with the transgressors” (Luke 22:37; Isaiah 53:12).

Jesus was committed to God’s path of sacrificial love and suffering. He knew that the ultimate victory would not be won by taking lives with a blade, but by giving His own life on a Roman cross.

The message for the disciples—and for us today—is clear. We are called to step into a hostile world armed not with weapons of steel, but with spiritual power, endurance, and radical faith. Following Jesus requires us to exchange our desire for self-preservation and control for the costly, beautiful path of sacrificial love.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Forgive us for the times we try to fight the world’s battles using the world’s harsh tactics. When we face hostility, rejection, or fear, give us the grace to lay down our physical and emotional swords. Teach us the depth of Your sacrificial love.

Equip us with Your Holy Spirit to endure difficult seasons with humility and faith. Help us to willingly carry our crosses, trusting that Your power is made perfect in our weakness, and that true victory belongs to the Lamb who was slain.
