³¹And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: ³²But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

The Sifting and the Intercession: Finding Strength in Luke 22:31-32

In one of the most sobering yet deeply comforting exchanges in the New Testament, Jesus turns to Peter and delivers a profound revelation about the spiritual battles occurring behind the scenes of our lives:

“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” (Luke 22:31-32)

This short passage pulls back the curtain on the invisible realm, revealing two timeless truths that every believer must anchor themselves to when facing trials, doubt, and temptation.

1. Satan’s Boundries: The Limit of the Enemy’s Reach

When Jesus reveals that Satan asked to “sift you as wheat,” the first vital truth we learn is that the devil operates on a leash.

Just as we see in the life of Job, Satan cannot touch a child of God without permission, nor can he exceed the boundaries set by the Almighty (Job 1:10, 12). Sifting separates the chaff from the valuable grain through violent shaking. While the enemy’s intent in the shaking is always total destruction, God’s intent in allowing the trial is purification. Take heart: the devil is not free to do whatever he wants with your life. Your suffering has a boundary, and your Savior holds the key.

2. Jesus’ Intercession: Our Heavenly Mediator

The second truth brings ultimate comfort: Before the trial even begins, Jesus is already praying for you.

Jesus did not stop praying for His people when He ascended to heaven. As our heavenly mediator, He continues to pray for all who “come to God through Him, because He always lives to interceding for them” (Hebrews 7:25). When temptations mount, God remains faithful to provide a way of escape so that we can endure and overcome (1 Corinthians 10:13).

However, we must remember that spiritual victory is not automatic. The fulfillment of Jesus’ prayers in our lives is conditional upon our response. If we reject His mercy, ignore His guidance, and rely entirely on our own strength, we render His provisions ineffective in our lives. We are called to actively cooperate with His grace, laying down our pride and leaning wholly on His strength to survive the sifting.

If you are being shaken today, look up. The enemy may have asked to sift you, but the Savior has already prayed for you.

A Closing Prayer for Strength in the Sifting

Heavenly Father,

We come before You acknowledging that this world brings seasons of intense shaking and trial. Lord, when the enemy seeks to sift us like wheat, remind our hearts that he is bound by Your sovereign limits. Thank You that nothing can touch our lives without passing through Your hands first.

Lord Jesus, we thank You for Your relentless intercession. Thank You for praying for us before we even know we are in danger. Forgive us for the times we try to fight spiritual battles in our own strength. We choose today to rely completely on Your mercy, Your guidance, and Your grace. When our faith feels weak, anchor us in Your truth. Give us the endurance to overcome temptation, and when You carry us through to the other side, use our testimonies to strengthen our brothers and sisters.

In Jesus’ mighty and holy name we pray, Amen.
