For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.

The Heart of a Leader: Embodying “The One Who Serves”

In a world obsessed with titles, influence, and upward mobility, Jesus turns the traditional pyramid of leadership completely upside down. We often measure success by how many people report to us, but Christ measures success by how many people we serve.

In Luke 22:27, Jesus poses a striking question to His disciples:

“For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.”

With these few words, Jesus redefines leadership for everyone who chooses to follow Him—especially those chosen to lead within His Church.

Leading by Example, Not by Force

When we look at the qualifications for church leadership laid out in 1 Timothy 3:1-7, we don’t find a list of corporate achievements or demands for charismatic dominance. Instead, God calls for leaders of high moral character, humility, and self-control.

True biblical leaders are called to lead by example. They are not spiritual bosses barking orders from the top; they are servants in the trenches. Their primary mission is to help others discover their own God-given gifts, nurture those talents, and empower them to fulfill God’s unique purposes for their lives. A Christ-like leader finds joy not in being spotlighted, but in seeing others flourish in their calling.

The Temptation of the Pedestal

Leadership carries a heavy weight of trust, and with that trust comes temptation. It is dangerously easy for church leaders to gradually shift their focus from the Savior to themselves.

Scripture warns us that leaders must strive at all times never to misuse or betray the sacred trust given to them. The moment a leader sets their heart on gaining popularity, chasing power, accumulating wealth, or demanding special privileges, they have stepped out of the footsteps of Jesus.

Christ had all the power in the universe, yet He chose a towel and a basin to wash His disciples’ feet. If the King of Kings refused to demand special treatment, how can those who under-shepherd His flock expect anything less?

A Call to Servant Leadership

Whether you hold an official title in a church, lead a small group, or simply influence a friend, remember the posture of Jesus. True authority in the Kingdom of God is birthed out of humility. Let us guard our hearts against the craving for recognition, and instead ask ourselves daily: How can I serve today?

A Closing Prayer for Our Leaders

Heavenly Father,

We come before You today lifting up all those whom You have chosen and called to lead Your Church. Lord, protect their hearts. Keep them grounded in the truth of Your Word and anchored in the humility of Your Son, Jesus Christ.

Guard them against the subtle traps of popularity, the hunger for power, and the pursuit of wealth or special privilege. Instead, grant them the spirit of a servant. Give them the wisdom and patience to develop the gifts of those around them, guiding Your people to fulfill Your divine purposes.

May our leaders lead by example, carrying the trust given to them with the utmost integrity. Let Your grace sustain them, Your love compel them, and Your humility define them. We ask that Your Church would shine brightly because our leaders choose to walk as Jesus walked—as those who serve.
