WAITING FOR THEIR MASTER /LUKE 12:36

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 12:36

And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.

Waiting for Their Master: A Reflection on Luke 12:36

In a world that demands instant gratification, waiting is often seen as a passive, frustrating waste of time. We scroll through our phones in long lines, tap our fingers impatiently at red lights, and grow anxious when our prayers aren’t answered on our preferred timeline. Yet, in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus introduces us to a completely different kind of waiting—one marked by sharp focus, deep devotion, and eager anticipation.

In Luke 12:36, Jesus instructs His disciples: “And be like men who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that they may immediately open the door to him when he comes and knocks.”

This imagery painted a vivid picture for the original listeners. In the ancient world, a wedding feast could last for days, and the exact hour of the master’s return was entirely unpredictable. This isn’t the reluctant waiting of a tired employee watching the clock. It is the joyful, alert anticipation of servants who love their master and want to welcome him home the very second he arrives.

To wait like this requires intentional focus. This verse sits within a broader call to live with our lamps lit and our garments tucked in, ready for sudden action. This vigilance isn’t born out of anxiety or fear of punishment, but out of a deep relationship. If the servants were asleep, self-indulgent, or distracted by the cares of the world, a sudden knock would cause panic. But for the watchful servant, the master’s knock is the long-awaited highlight of the night.

The beautiful irony of this parable unfolds in the verses that follow. Jesus promises that when the master returns and finds his servants watching, he will do something utterly shocking: he will dress himself to serve, recline them at the table, and wait on them. This mirrors the radical grace of Christ, who came not to be served, but to serve, and who promises an eternal wedding feast to those who remain faithful.

Living in expectation of our Master’s return fundamentally transforms how we spend our ordinary days. It shifts our perspective from accumulating temporary earthly treasures to investing in things of eternal value. This readiness frees us from everyday worries and hypocrisy, keeping our hearts firmly anchored in Christ.

Are we ready to open the door at a moment’s notice? May we keep our lamps burning brightly, our hearts fully awake, and our hands busy doing the good work of the Kingdom.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible promise that Jesus will return one day to make all things new. Forgive us for the times we allow our hearts to fall asleep, weighed down by the distractions, anxieties, and temporary pleasures of this world.

Lord Jesus, give us the grace to be watchful servants. Keep our spiritual lamps burning brightly with faith, love, and active service. Fill us with a joyful anticipation for Your arrival, so that whenever You knock—whether in the middle of the night or just before the dawn—we may open the door immediately and welcome You with gladness. Teach us to live each day with eternity in view, trusting in Your perfect timing and resting in Your ultimate grace. In Your holy and matchless name, we pray. Amen.
