These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

The Ultimate Ministry Blueprint: Praying Like Jesus (John 17:1)

When you are facing your final hours on earth, what do you pray for? Where does your mind go when you know your time with the people you love is drawing to a close?

In John 17:1, we see Jesus lifting His eyes to heaven at the brink of the crucifixion. He begins what is known as the High Priestly Prayer. This final prayer for His disciples reveals our Lord’s deepest desires for His followers, both then and now.

John 17:1 captures the ultimate blueprint for spiritual leadership, pastoral care, and Christian parenting. It models exactly how pastors, ministry leaders, and parents should intercede for those under their care. When we pray for our churches, our ministries, and our children, our greatest concerns should shift away from temporary comfort and align with the eternal priorities Jesus sets before us.

Based on Jesus’ perfect example, here is how we should be praying for those God has entrusted to us:

• Intimate Knowledge of Christ: Pray that they may know Jesus Christ and His Word intimately, grounding their identity in eternal life (John 17:2-3, 17, 19).
• Protection and Discernment: Pray that God may protect them from the evil influences of the world, keeping them from turning away from Him, and granting them the wisdom to recognize and reject ungodly beliefs and false spiritual teaching (John 17:6, 11, 14-17).
• Fullness of Joy: Pray that they may constantly possess the full joy of serving Christ, finding strength in His presence regardless of their circumstances (John 17:13).
• Purity and Truth: Pray that they may live by God’s standards of purity and truth in their thoughts, actions, and character (John 17:17).
• Supernatural Unity: Pray that they may be unified in love and purpose, reflecting the perfect unity shared between Jesus and the Father (John 17:11, 21-22).
• Missional Hearts: Pray that their lives and testimonies will lead others to Christ, expanding the Kingdom through their obedience (John 17:21, 23).
• Enduring Faith: Pray that their faith will endure through trials so they will one day be with Christ in heaven, finishing their race well (John 17:24).
• Experiencing God’s Love: Pray that they may constantly experience the tangible reality of God’s love and presence in their daily lives (John 17:26).

When we anchor our prayers in these eight petitions, we stop praying for mere behavior modification and start praying for supernatural transformation. Let us lift our eyes to heaven today, just as Jesus did, and intercede with eternal vision.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We lift our eyes to You today, acknowledging that the time is short and the harvest is plentiful. Thank You for the ultimate example of intercession left to us by Your Son in John 17. We ask that You would give us the heart of Jesus for the people You have placed under our care—our congregations, our ministries, and our children.

Lord, we pray that they would know You intimately and be sanctified by Your truth. Protect them from the corruptive influences of this world and give them sharp discernment to reject false teachings. Fill them to overflowing with Your joy, and bind them together in a supernatural unity that shows the world who Jesus is. Keep their feet firmly on the path of purity, give them a passion to lead others to salvation, and sustain their faith until the day they see You face-to-face. Let them rest securely in Your perfect love today.
