For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

The Source of Real Life: Understanding John 5:26

Have you ever wondered where true vitality comes from? In a world full of temporary fixes, counterfeit joys, and fleeting moments of happiness, it is easy to mistake “existing” for “living.” But in John 5:26, Jesus reveals a profound truth about the cosmos and His identity: “For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.”

Life is Who He Is

To understand this verse is to understand the very nature of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ’s own nature is a source of eternal life; it is part of who He is. As John 1:4 reminds us, “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.”

Unlike us, Jesus does not look outward for sustenance, meaning, or existence. He possesses life inherently. This means that to know Christ is to know real life. When we connect with Him, we aren’t just adopting a new moral code or a set of rules; we are plugging directly into the foundational power source of the universe.

The Gift We Cannot Earn

Here is the humbling reality: God has not given us the power to have eternal life—a personal and eternal relationship with God—on our own. We cannot manufacture it through good deeds, preserve it through healthy living, or earn it through willpower. Left to ourselves, our spiritual batteries run completely flat.

True, eternal life is not an independent superpower we possess. Instead, it is a shared reality. We can experience this life as God desires only as we trust Christ and remain devoted to close companionship with Him.

Abiding in the Vine

How do we practically live out this connection? Scripture gives us a beautiful roadmap:

Abide and Remain: In John 15:4, Jesus instructs us, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you.” Apart from Him, we can do nothing.
Surrender Control: Paul echoes this in Galatians 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.”

When we stop trying to forge our own path and instead choose daily, close companionship with Jesus, His self-contained life begins to overflow into ours. Are you tired of running on empty? Turn your gaze back to the Son, the only true source of life.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being the ultimate source of all existence. Lord Jesus, we marvel at the truth that You hold life within Yourself, and that through Your grace, You invite us to share in it. Forgive us for the times we try to find fulfillment, identity, and life outside of You.

We admit that we cannot sustain ourselves. Today, we choose to surrender our independent striving. Help us to abide deeply in You, to trust Your character, and to remain devoted to close companionship with You every single day. Let Your eternal life flow through us so that we may experience reality exactly as You desired it to be.
