START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) John 11:27
She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
Seeing Past the Kitchen: Martha’s Great Confession
We often give Martha a hard time. When her name comes up in conversation or Sunday school lessons, our minds immediately go to Luke 10:40-41, where she is flustered, distracted by preparations, and gently rebuked by Jesus for missing the “one thing” her sister Mary had found.
Because of that single snapshot, we frequently reduce Martha to a cautionary tale about busyness. But if we leave her in the kitchen, we miss one of the most explosive, foundational moments of faith in the entire New Testament.
Martha was not just a distracted host. She was a powerful woman of faith, a close friend of Jesus, and a disciple who recognized exactly who He was, even when her world was crashing down around her.
Faith in the Midst of Grief
In John 11, we find Martha in a radically different context. Her brother, Lazarus, has died. Jesus has arrived “late” by human standards, and the house is filled with mourners.
When Martha hears Jesus is coming, she doesn’t sit still. She runs out to meet Him on the road. Her initial words to Him carry the raw weight of grief: “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
But notice what she says next, showing a staggering level of trust: “But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.”
Even now. Before the tomb is opened, before the miracle takes place, and while the sting of death is entirely fresh, Martha anchors herself to the power of Jesus.
The Ultimate Declaration
Jesus looks at her and reveals one of His most profound identity statements: “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live…” Then, He asks her a direct question: “Do you believe this?”
Martha’s response in John 11:27 deserves to be spoken in the same breath as Peter’s famous confession:
“Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”
With these few words, Martha cuts through the noise of her grief and the expectations of the crowd. She declares a theological truth that many of the religious leaders of her day spent years trying to disprove. She recognizes His love, trusts His power, and submits to His ultimate purpose.
Martha teaches us that it is possible to be brokenhearted and completely faithful at the same time. You can question the timing of Jesus while still worshiping the authority of Jesus.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the example of Martha—a woman who loved deeply, served willingly, and believed fiercely. Forgive us for the times we reduce people, or ourselves, to our weakest moments. Help us to see, through Martha’s life, that our moments of distraction do not disqualify us from moments of deep, world-changing faith.
Lord, when life hurts, when answers are delayed, and when we are standing outside our own seasons of grief, give us “even now” faith. Give us the courage to look at the impossible and declare, “I believe that you are the Christ.” We trust in Your love, we rely on Your power, and we rest in Your perfect purpose.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
