JESUS LOVED MARTHA AND HER SISTER AND LAZARUS / JOHN 11:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 11:5

Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

The Sovereignty of His Silence: Trusting Jesus When Love Delays

It is one of the most comforting yet challenging sentences in holy scripture. In John 11:5, we are given an explicit window into the heart of Christ: “Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.”

We read these words and expect the very next sentence to tell us that Jesus rushed to their side to fix everything. Instead, the narrative takes a confusing turn. Jesus stays right where He is for two more days, letting His friends face the absolute worst.

If you have ever felt like God’s timing is painfully slow, or if you are currently sitting in a season of unanswered prayer, this specific story is meant to anchor your soul.

The Reality of a Faithful Family’s Pain

The household at Bethany was a family that had a true and strong devotion to Jesus (John 11:2). They enjoyed a close personal relationship with Him, opening their home and their lives to His ministry (Luke 10:38-42). He didn’t just minister to them; He considered them to be very special friends.

Still, they experienced deep sorrow, heavy sickness, and ultimately, death.

Their devotion did not shield them from the brokenness of human life. Today, the exact same types of trouble touch the lives of faithful Christians as well. Loving Jesus, serving His kingdom, and pursuing holiness do not buy us an insurance policy against suffering.

When we look across the church today, we see this exact household mirrored in our congregations:

  • The Marys: Believers who are outwardly passionate about their devotion to the Lord, seeking intimacy and lingering at His feet.
  • The Marthas: Those who are relentlessly faithful in good works, keeping the church moving forward through hard work and service.
  • The Lazaruses: Faithful brothers and sisters who are currently suffering, enduring physical or emotional pain, and facing the slow reality of death.

Families like this, and so many others in the church, frequently encounter seasons where they wonder why God does not take immediate action. We cry out alongside David, the suffering Savior, and the martyrs of old, feeling as though He has entirely forgotten us (Psalms 13:1; Matthew 27:46; Revelation 6:10).

The Purpose Hidden Inside the Delay

John meticulously pairs Jesus’ deep love for this family with His decision to delay. He wants us to understand a foundational truth about the kingdom: If Jesus seems to delay His healing or relief, it is never for a lack of love, mercy, or compassion.

Jesus was fully aware of their pain. His heart was broken with theirs. But He intentionally waited for just the right moment to act, driven by a higher purpose:

  • To bring the greatest honor to God: The final outcome would put the absolute majesty and power of God on full display, proving that death has no final victory (John 11:4).
  • To secure the greatest eternal good: He didn’t just want to cure a temporary sickness; He wanted to anchor their faith permanently in the truth that He is the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:15, 23-26, 40-44).

A physical healing would have comforted them for a few decades, but the resurrection of Lazarus anchored their souls for eternity. Trust His silence. He is always there to guide us through the most difficult circumstances of life, and He is orchestrating a testimony that will far outweigh the temporary weight of the trial.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come to You today acknowledging that Your ways are higher than our ways, and Your thoughts are higher than our thoughts. We lift up every person reading this who is currently trapped in a painful delay. For those who are working hard like Martha, give them strength. For those who are weeping like Mary, pour out Your supernatural comfort. And for those who are suffering in body or spirit like Lazarus, remind them that death and sickness do not have the final say.

Forgive us for the moments we mistake Your silence for absence or Your delay for a lack of love. Guard our hearts against despair when we feel forgotten. Help us to rest securely in the truth of John 11:5—that we are deeply, fiercely loved by Jesus. We yield our timelines to Your sovereignty, trusting that You will bring the greatest honor to Your name and the greatest eternal good to our lives. In Jesus’ mighty and holy name, Amen.
