START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Ephesians 4:32
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
The Weight of Water: Finding Freedom in True Forgiveness
We have all been there—holding onto a grudge like a heavy shield, convinced that our anger somehow protects us from being hurt again. We play the offenses on a loop in our minds, cataloging the reasons why they don’t deserve our grace. But if we are honest, keeping that ledger of wrongs doesn’t punish the other person; it only poisons our own hearts with bitterness.
In his letter to the church at Ephesus, the Apostle Paul offers us a radical alternative to the exhausting cycle of resentment.
“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” — Ephesians 4:32 (ESV)
This short verse provides a profound three-part blueprint for how we are called to handle relationships in a broken world.
1. Shift Your Posture: Kindness and Compassion
Paul doesn’t just tell us to change our actions; he tells us to change our attitude. He starts with kindness and a tender heart. When someone hurts us, our natural defense mechanism is to harden our hearts and grow callous. We build walls. But a tender heart remains soft and empathetic, capable of seeing beyond our own pain to recognize that hurting people usually hurt others. Kindness is the active, gentle expression of that soft heart in our words and everyday interactions.
2. The Definition of Forgiveness: Release
To forgive simply means to release. It is a deliberate decision to let go of the debt that someone owes you. It doesn’t mean pretending the offense never happened, nor does it mean instantly restoring trust where it has been broken. Instead, it means handing the heavy burden of revenge, retaliation, and bitterness over to God. When you forgive, you release the offender from your emotional prison, only to discover that the prisoner you actually set free was yourself.
3. The Ultimate Standard: As Christ Forgave You
If we try to forge this kind of forgiveness out of our own human strength, we will fail. True, lavish forgiveness is an unnatural ability. That is why Paul anchors the command to an undeniable reality: “as God in Christ forgave you”.
Our capacity to grant grace to others is directly tied to our awareness of the grace we have already received. God did not wait for us to earn His forgiveness, nor did He give it because we deserved it. Through Jesus on the cross, He freely, fully, and unconditionally blotted out our debts. When we truly grasp the sheer magnitude of our own forgiveness, withholding grace from someone else becomes impossible.
Today, let’s stop waiting for the other person to apologize, drop the heavy shield of resentment, and choose the path of freedom.
A Closing Prayer for Forgiveness
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the profound depth of love and grace You have lavished upon me through Jesus Christ. Thank You that while I was still far off, You moved toward me with a compassionate, forgiving heart.
Lord, You know the areas of my heart where bitterness, hurt, and resentment have started to take root. You know exactly who has hurt me, and how heavy that burden has been to carry. I confess that in my own human weakness, I struggle to let go and extend grace.
Today, I ask for an extra measure of Your Holy Spirit to transform my heart. Uproot all seeds of unforgiveness and replace them with a supernatural kindness and tenderheartedness. Grant me the strength to release the debts owed to me, just as You have completely released mine. May my life be a living reflection of Your mercy and a testament to the healing power of Your love.
In the beautiful name of Jesus, Amen.
