(KJV) Colossians 2:18
Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
Christ Alone: Understanding Paul’s Warning Against the Worship of Angels
In his letter to the Colossians, the Apostle Paul issues a sharp, urgent warning that resonates just as strongly today as it did in the first century. In Colossians 2:18, he writes about a dangerous trap threatening the spiritual life of the church: the practice of looking to created beings instead of the Creator.
During Paul’s time, false teachers were infiltrating the community, claiming that humans were too distant from God to approach Him directly. They argued that people needed to call on and worship angels as cosmic mediators to bridge the gap. To Paul, this wasn’t just a minor theological disagreement—it was a devastating strike at the very heart of the gospel.
The Danger of Disconnecting from the Head
Paul exposes the root issue of this practice in the very next verse: those who focus on angel worship are “not holding fast to the Head” (Colossians 2:19).
Jesus Christ is the supreme, sufficient, and exclusive Head of the Church. When we look to any other spiritual being—whether an angel, a cosmic power, or a spiritual guide—to act as our bridge to God, we fail to recognize who Jesus is. We downgrade Him from the supreme Lord of all creation to just one option among many.
Our world today is really no different. The human heart continually looks for tangible, alternative ways to reach the divine. We see this play out when people practice the worship of or prayer to dead saints, viewing them as personal patrons or secondary mediators who can secure God’s favor on our behalf.
Just like the ancient Colossian heresy, these practices try to rob Christ of His absolute supremacy in the plan of salvation.
Jesus is Our Sufficient Intermediary
The Bible is beautifully clear: there is one God and one Mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5).
When Jesus died on the cross, the veil separating us from the holy presence of God was torn in two. Because of His perfect sacrifice, you do not need an angelic escort, a departed saint, or a secret spiritual ritual to get God’s attention. Through faith in Christ, you can approach the throne of grace boldly and directly.
Worship and prayer directed to anyone other than God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are entirely unbiblical. As believers, we must firmly reject anything that tries to take the crown off Jesus’ head and place it on a created being. He alone is worthy. He alone is enough.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We praise You for the unmatched beauty, supremacy, and sufficiency of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You that through His broken body and shed cross, the way to Your presence has been opened wide. We confess that our hearts can easily be distracted by the visible and invisible things of this world. Protect us from any false teaching or subtle practice that seeks to share the glory belonging to Christ alone.
Forgive us for the times we have relied on anything or anyone other than Jesus to secure our peace, our protection, or our access to You. Keep our hearts anchored firmly to Him, our true Head. Teach us to worship You in spirit and in truth, directing our prayers strictly to You—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We ask that Christ would have the ultimate preeminence in our lives, our thoughts, and our worship today and forever.
In the mighty and matchless name of Jesus, Amen.
