(KJV) Colossians 2:14
Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
Nailed to the Cross: Finding Freedom from the Code That Condemned Us
Have you ever felt the crushing weight of trying to be perfect? Many of us strive to live by an internal checklist, trying desperately to prove our worth to those around us—and to God. But the truth is, no matter how hard we try, we always seem to fall short.
In Colossians 2:14, the Apostle Paul delivers some of the most liberating news in the entire Bible. He writes that God has “canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.”
The Weight of the Code
To understand the sheer magnitude of this verse, we have to understand what this “legal indebtedness” or “written code” actually is. This refers directly to the Law of Moses, the system of commandments God gave to Israel.
The Law was, and still is, a perfect mirror of God’s holy and righteous standards. But while it could set the standard for right conduct, it lacked one crucial thing: the power to give life or enable us to obey.
Instead, the commandments served as a cosmic mirror, exposing our offenses and highlighting our human inability to live up to God’s perfect standard. It became a record of debt—a list of accusations proving that we owed a spiritual penalty we could never hope to pay.
Canceled and Nailed Away
But look at what God did with that record of debt. He didn’t just tuck it away in a drawer or pretend our failure didn’t matter. Instead, He nailed it to the cross.
Because Jesus Christ lived a completely flawless life, He fulfilled the Law perfectly. And because He was blameless, He was able to become the perfect, final sacrifice for our sins. When Jesus was nailed to the cross, our certificate of debt was pinned there with Him. God completely canceled the law’s accusations against everyone who responds to Christ in faith. The old covenant way of trying to earn status with God through flawless performance is officially over, replaced by a better covenant built on Christ’s finished work.
Freedom to Truly Live
Does this mean God’s moral standards no longer matter? Not at all. God’s laws are still good, holy, and valid. They still serve to expose sin and point people directly to their need for a Savior.
The beautiful difference for the believer is motive and power:
- We don’t obey to get saved; we obey because we are saved.
- We don’t follow God to earn His favor; we follow Him to show our deep love and gratitude for what He has already done.
Through the Holy Spirit, Christians are finally given the internal power to meet the righteous requirements of the law. You no longer have to live under the shadow of a clipboard, wondering if you’ve done enough. The debt is paid. The ledger is blank. You are free.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the staggering grace found in Colossians 2:14. We confess that we often try to live by our own strength, carrying the heavy burden of performance and the fear of not being enough. Thank You for taking that overwhelming record of our debts, shortcomings, and failures, and nailing it permanently to the cross of Your Son.
Thank You, Jesus, for fulfilling the law perfectly on our behalf and paying a price we could never afford. Because of Your sacrifice, the accusations against us have been completely canceled.
Holy Spirit, we ask that You fill us afresh today. Do not let us slide back into legalism or guilt, but let us walk in the true freedom of the gospel. Give us the desire and the power to live righteously—not to win Your love, but as a joyful overflow of gratitude for the love You have already poured out on us.
In Jesus’ precious and powerful name, Amen.
