START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Colossians 2:12
Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
Buried and Raised: The Transformative Power of Colossians 2:12
Have you ever felt trapped by your past mistakes, heavy with guilt, or stuck in habits that you just can’t seem to break? It is easy to feel like our old patterns define us. But the gospel gives us a completely different identity.
In Colossians 2:12, the Apostle Paul shares a profound truth about what happens when we surrender our lives to Jesus:
“having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.“
This single verse serves as a beautiful description of our supernatural transformation in Christ. Let’s break down what it means to be buried and raised with Him.
1. The Burial: Leaving the Old Self Behind
When someone is buried, it signifies that a life has ended, and it is time to move on. In the spiritual realm, going under the waters of baptism symbolizes a funeral. The “old you”—dominated by sin, shame, and a broken relationship with God—is officially dead and buried.
Paul reinforces that our sins are not just hidden; they are entirely put away. Jesus took the record of charges against us and canceled it completely. You no longer have to carry the weight of who you used to be, because that person no longer exists in the eyes of God.
2. The Resurrection: Walking in New Life
Praise God that the story does not end in the grave! Just as Christ did not stay in the tomb, we do not stay under the water. Coming up out of the water represents a spiritual resurrection. You are brought to life as a completely new creation, given a brand-new heart, transformed desires, and an eternal purpose.
This new life brings a profound freedom:
- Freedom from the penalty of sin: Your past is completely forgiven.
- Freedom from the power of sin: You are no longer helpless against destructive habits; the same power that conquered the grave now lives inside you.
3. The Active Ingredient: Faith in God’s Power
How does this transformation actually happen? Paul makes it clear that it isn’t the water itself that saves us, nor is it the religious ritual. The miracle happens through faith in the powerful working of God.
Baptism is an outward declaration of an inward reality. It is our active trust that God is doing exactly what He promised: uniting us to Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. The identical divine power that physically raised Jesus from the dead is the exact same power that regenerates our hearts today.
Live in the Reality of Your Resurrection
If you have put your trust in Jesus, you are an action hero who was presumed dead but has started entirely over. Do not dig up what God has already buried. When shame, temptation, or old thoughts try to pull you back, remind yourself of your true position in Christ: You have been buried, you have been raised, and you are completely alive in Him.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible miracle of the gospel. Thank You that I am no longer defined by my past, my sins, or my failures. I praise You that my old self was buried with Christ, and that the heavy slate of my debt has been completely wiped clean.
Lord, help me to live every single day in the reality of my resurrection. By Your Holy Spirit, give me the strength to walk in newness of life and to reject the old ways that were left in the grave. Anchor my heart in faith, and let me trust completely in Your powerful working. May the same power that raised Jesus from the dead fill me with joy, peace, and holiness today. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
