Transformed from the Inside Out: The Circumcision Done by Christ
We live in a world obsessed with outward transformations. From fitness makeovers to curated social media feeds, we place immense value on what can be seen on the outside. But when it comes to our relationship with God, external modifications are never enough. God has always been after something much deeper: our hearts.
In Colossians 2:11-12, the Apostle Paul highlights a profound spiritual shift from the old covenant to the new, revealing how true transformation takes place not by human hands, but through Jesus Christ.
“In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.”
The Sign of the Old Covenant
To understand the weight of Paul’s words, we have to look back. In the Old Testament, physical circumcision was the definitive sign of God’s covenant with Israel (Genesis 17:11). It was a physical marker that set an individual apart as belonging to God, symbolizing a separation from the wickedness and ungodliness of the surrounding world.
However, physical circumcision was only ever meant to be a shadow of a greater spiritual reality. Throughout the Old Testament, God continually called His people to look deeper, challenging them to “circumcise your hearts” (Deuteronomy 10:16; Jeremiah 4:4). The physical act was meaningless if the heart remained rebellious and unchanged.
The Spiritual Cutting Away
Under the New Covenant, Jesus fulfills what the physical law could never truly accomplish. When you place your faith in Christ, you undergo a spiritual surgery—a circumcision done by Christ Himself, completely apart from human hands.
What exactly does Christ cut away? Paul tells us that the “whole self ruled by the flesh” is put off. This is a radical, spiritual stripping away of our old, rebellious nature. Christ severs the power that sin once held over our lives, fundamentally changing who we are at our core. It is the definitive fulfillment of the promised “circumcision of the heart” (Romans 2:29).
Buried and Raised with Him
Paul then connects this spiritual circumcision to the imagery of baptism. When we go under the water, it symbolizes being buried with Christ—the final funeral for our old, sinful self. And when we are brought up out of the water, we are raised into a brand-new life.
This new life is not fueled by our own willpower or legalistic striving. It is powered by the exact same life-transforming strength that raised Jesus from the dead. We are no longer victims of our past or slaves to our sinful desires. We have been made alive, unified with Christ, and equipped with resurrection power to walk in holiness.
If you belong to Christ, your old identity is gone. The knife of human effort cannot save you, but the grace of Jesus has already transformed you. Trust in His finished work, lean into His power, and walk confidently in the freedom of a circumcised heart.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the beautiful mystery of the New Covenant, established through the life, death, and resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ. We praise You that our relationship with You is not based on external rituals or our own flawed efforts, but on the flawless work of Jesus.
Lord, we thank You for the spiritual surgery You have performed in our lives. Thank You for cutting away our old, rebellious nature and putting off the flesh that once enslaved us. We ask that You continually remind us of our true identity in Christ. When the enemy tries to drag us back to our old ways, anchor our minds in the truth that our old selves have been buried, and we have been raised to new life.
May the same resurrection power that brought Jesus out of the grave active work in us today. Help us to walk in holiness, love, and obedience, reflecting a heart completely transformed by Your grace. Set us apart for Your glory, and let our lives be a testament to Your saving power.
In the mighty name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
