LOVE THE LORD AND LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR / LUKE 10:27

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 10:27

And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

The Vertical and Horizontal of Faith: Living Out Luke 10:27

It is one of the most famous conversations in the entire New Testament. A lawyer, looking to test Jesus, asks a deceptively simple question: “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

Jesus, masterfully turning the question back to him, asks what is written in the Law. The man replies with the words that form the very heartbeat of the Christian walk:

“He answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'”Luke 10:27

In a single sentence, we are given the ultimate blueprint for human existence. This verse outlines a two-dimensional faith: a vertical relationship with our Creator and a horizontal relationship with His creation.

When we break down Luke 10:27, we see exactly what a life poured out in love looks like.

1. The Vertical Axis: Loving God Intentionally

Jesus doesn’t ask for a casual, Sunday-only acquaintance. He calls for radical, all-consuming devotion across four distinct areas of our being:

  • With all your heart: The seat of our emotions, desires, and affections. It means choosing Him above all other earthly attachments.
  • With all your soul: The core of our identity, will, and eternal personality. It means anchoring our spirit in His truth.
  • With all your strength: Our physical energy, capabilities, talents, and practical resources. It means using our physical bodies and daily labor to honor Him.
  • With all your mind: Our intellect, thoughts, and focus. It means filtering what we think about through the lens of God’s word.

This vertical alignment is vital. We cannot truly love people the way God intends unless we are first filled with and grounded in the love of God.

2. The Horizontal Axis: Loving Your Neighbor Unconditionally

Immediately after establishing our vertical focus, the verse pivots outward: “and love your neighbor as yourself.”

As the rest of Luke 10 reveals through the famous Parable of the Good Samaritan, our “neighbor” isn’t just the person who looks like us, shares our theology, or lives next door. A neighbor is anyone God places in our path who is in need.

Loving our neighbor means:

  • Stepping out of our comfort zones to offer practical help.
  • Forgiving flaws, mistakes, and differences.
  • Celebrating their victories and building them up during seasons of weakness.

Bringing It Together

Faith is like a cross. It requires both the vertical beam reaching up to God and the horizontal beam stretching out to embrace others. When we live out Luke 10:27, the gospel stops being a concepts we just debate and becomes a tangible reality that heals a broken world.

Closing Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

We come before You today humbled by the beautiful simplicity and profound weight of Your greatest commandment. Lord, forgive us for the times we have passed by on the other side of the road, closing our hearts to those in need. Forgive us for the moments our love for You has been lukewarm or divided.

Today, we ask for a fresh outpouring of Your Holy Spirit. Teach us to love You completely—with every beat of our heart, every depth of our soul, every ounce of our strength, and every thought in our mind. Ground us so deeply in Your grace that Your love naturally overflows into the lives of those around us.

Give us eyes to see the wounded and lonely on our daily paths. Give us the courage to step past our biases, our busy schedules, and our comfort zones to be a good neighbor. May our lives be a living reflection of Your mercy, bringing light and healing to our communities.

In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.
