That All of Them May Be One: Reflecting on Christ’s Deepest Desire

In the shadow of the cross, during His final hours with His disciples, Jesus poured out His heart to the Father. Recorded in John 17, this High Priestly Prayer gives us a rare, intimate look into the deepest desires of Christ.

Remarkably, Jesus didn’t pray for His followers to gain political power, wealth, or worldly success. Instead, he prayed for something far more crucial: “That all of them may be one” (John 17:21).

Jesus emphasizes this specific request four times throughout His prayer (John 17:11, 21-23). When the Savior of the world repeats Himself that many times on the night before His crucifixion, we must pause and ask ourselves: Why is unity so vital to Him, and what does true biblical unity actually look like?

The Purpose of Unity: Credibility to the World

Jesus makes a direct connection between the unity of His church and the success of His mission: “…that the world may believe that you have sent me” (John 17:21).

Our unity is the primary factor that confirms the truth of the Gospel to a watching world. When Christ’s followers live in genuine oneness, it provides a powerful, undeniable testimony. Conversely, when we are fractured, competitive, and divided, our testimony loses its credibility. Without unity, few people in the world will give serious thought to following Christ. Our spiritual harmony is the visual proof of God’s love and Christ’s saving power.

What True Unity Is—and Isn’t

Too often, we mistake organizational unity or uniformity for the spiritual unity Jesus desired.

It is not organizational conformity: True unity is not manufactured by human efforts, complex organizations, massive conferences, or a forced appearance of togetherness. Forcing exterior compliance often results in internal tension and frustration.
It does not mean absolute agreement on everything: God’s people do not need to have the exact same perspective on every minor issue or cultural preference.
It is a continuous state of being: Jesus did not pray for His followers to “become one” as a temporary goal to achieve. The original language uses a phrasing that means to “continually be one.” It is an ongoing lifestyle and attitude.

The Pillars of Spiritual Unity

The oneness Jesus envisioned is a deep, supernatural spiritual unity of heart, mind, and purpose (Ephesians 4:3). It is anchored securely in our common relationship with the Father and the Son, and it relies on several key factors:

True Spiritual Salvation: A shared, personal, living relationship with Jesus Christ (John 17:23).
Experiencing Fatherly Love: Knowing and resting in the love of the Father and the constant companionship of Christ (John 17:26).
Separation from the World: Having a transformed attitude that rejects the evil ways of the world (John 17:14-16).
Devotion to Truth: Receiving, believing, obeying, and growing in the truth of God’s Word (John 17:6; John 17:8; John 17:17; John 17:19).
A Shared Mission: A unified, burning desire to bring Christ’s message of forgiveness and salvation to those who do not yet know Him (John 17:21, 23).

When any of these foundational elements are missing, complete biblical unity cannot exist.

Moving Forward in Oneness

We are called to maintain an uncompromising commitment to honoring Christ, staying true to His Word, and leading others into a personal relationship with God. Let us lay aside superficial divisions and choose to walk daily in the supernatural oneness that Jesus bought for us on the cross—so that the world may look at His Church and believe.

A Closing Prayer for Unity

Heavenly Father,

We come before You today deeply moved by the prayer of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Lord, we confess that Your church has often failed to reflect the oneness He so desperately desired for us. Forgive us for our petty divisions, our pride, and the times we have prioritized our own preferences over the credibility of Your Gospel.

We pray today that You would make us continually one. Knit our hearts together in a true, spiritual unity that can only come from the Holy Spirit. Give us a shared passion for Your Word, a fierce devotion to Your truth, and a burning heart for the lost.

May our love for one another be so vibrant and distinct that a watching world will see us and know without a doubt that You sent Jesus to save them. Let our lives be a credible, powerful testimony of Your redeeming love.
