IF YOU OBEY ME FULLY – MY TREASURED POSSESSION / EXODUS 19:5

(KJV) Exodus 19:5

Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

The Condition of Blessings: Understanding Exodus 19:5

We often love to focus on the beautiful promises of God—the moments where He calls us His own, protects us, and showers us with grace. But if we look closely at the foundations of faith laid down in the Old Testament, we find that relationship with God has always involved a heartfelt response.

In Exodus 19:5, God speaks a profound truth to the Israelites that still echoes into our lives today: “Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession.”

Let’s dive into what this means for our walk with God.

If You Obey Me Fully

Israel’s place as God’s chosen people depended directly on their obedience to Him as their Lord. That is why this verse—and many other places in God’s covenant—begins with the conditional word “if” and is followed by the word “then.” Israel’s obedience was the most important element in fulfilling God’s future purposes for them (Exodus 19:5-6).

This expectation of obedience was not a heavy, unfair burden. God had already shown His love, power, and constant mercies since the moment He miraculously brought them out of Egypt. He didn’t demand blindly; He revealed His character first, and simply wanted their love and obedience in return (Exodus 19:4; Deuteronomy 6:5).

Today, Jesus expects the exact same principle to be practiced. As we walk in a New Covenant relationship with Him, our faith is proven through our willingness to follow His lead (John 8:31; John 14:21; Romans 4:12; Hebrews 3:7-19). Obedience is the natural love-response to a Savior who has already rescued us.

My Treasured Possession

Because of this covenant, Israel was set apart to be God’s special, treasured possession (Deuteronomy 4:10; Amos 3:2; 9:7). While God values all people and all nations are accountable to Him as their Creator, Israel held a unique relationship with God. Why? Because of the specific way He had rescued them and revealed Himself to them. He wasn’t just a distant Creator; He was their Redeemer—the One who personally broke their chains and brought them out of slavery.

This beautiful purpose for Israel was actually a prophetic picture of God’s ultimate purpose for the New Testament church. Through Jesus, we have been brought out of the spiritual slavery of sin. As believers, we are now called His temple, His purified people, and His chosen generation (1 Corinthians 3:16; Titus 2:14; 1 Peter 2:5; 1 Peter 2:9). You are tightly held, deeply valued, and viewed as a treasure by the Creator of the universe.

Walking it Out

God’s love for us is unconditional, but intimacy with Him requires our cooperation. When we choose to “obey Him fully,” we aren’t trying to earn His love; we are stepping into the safety, purpose, and blessing of the covenant He has already established.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being our Redeemer. Thank You for rescuing us from darkness and calling us Your treasured possession. Forgive us for the times we treat Your grace casually or wander from Your path.

Lord, we want to respond to Your love with complete surrender. Holy Spirit, give us the strength and the desire to obey You fully today. Help us to keep Your word close to our hearts, to trust Your boundaries, and to walk faithfully in the New Covenant established by Jesus. May our lives honor You and show the world how good it is to belong to You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
