BORN OF WATER / JOHN 3:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 3:5

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Born of Water, Even the Spirit

When Jesus famously told Nicodemus in John 3:5 that “no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit,” He sparked a theological conversation that has spanned centuries. What exactly does it mean to be “born of water”?

While different traditions and scholars interpret this phrase in a few distinct ways, looking closer at the original language and context reveals a beautiful truth about how God transforms our lives.

Three Common Perspectives on “Water”

To understand this passage, it helps to look at the three primary ways Bible scholars approach the word “water” in John 3:5:

1. Physical Birth

Some scholars suggest that “water” refers to the amniotic fluid of natural birth. In this view, Jesus is telling Nicodemus that a person must first be born physically into the world, and then born a second time spiritually through faith.

2. Spiritual Cleansing Through the Word

Another common view connects water to the purifying nature of Scripture. Throughout the New Testament, the Word of God is frequently described as a washing or cleansing agent that leads to salvation and sanctification (Ephesians 5:26; 1 Peter 1:23).

3. The Purifying Work of the Holy Spirit

A thirdโ€”and highly compellingโ€”view looks at the grammar of the original Greek text. The conjunction kai (“and”) can also be translated as “even” or “that is.”

If we apply this translation, John 3:5 reads: “born of water, even the Spirit.”

Rather than describing two separate things, Jesus is likely using “water” as a metaphor for the Holy Spirit. Just three verses later in John 3:8, Jesus simplifies the phrase by saying a person must simply be “born of the Spirit.”

The Washing of Rebirth

This metaphorical connection between water, cleansing, and the Holy Spirit echoes throughout the rest of the New Testament. In Titus 3:5, Paul mirrors Jesusโ€™ words perfectly, writing that God saved us “through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.”

When we accept Christ, the Holy Spirit performs a profound, spiritually purifying work within us. He washes away the guilt of our past and breathes new, eternal life into our hearts. It is a complete renewalโ€”a true spiritual rebirth.

If you are seeking a fresh start or wondering how to enter into the kingdom of God, look to the Spirit. Let Him do the work of cleansing, renewing, and transforming your heart today.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the beautiful gift of new life. We praise You for the profound work of the Holy Spirit, who washes us clean, renews our hearts, and allows us to enter into Your kingdom. Lord, we ask that You continue to purify us from the inside out. Let Your Spirit flow through our lives like living water, guiding our steps and renewing our minds daily. Thank You for saving us not by our own works, but according to Your deep mercy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

BORN AGAIN / JOHN 3:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 3:3

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Understanding What It Means to Be Born Again

In John 3:3, Jesus delivers one of the most profound and foundational truths of the Christian faith. During a late-night conversation with Nicodemus, a prominent religious leader, Jesus declares, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”

For Nicodemus, this concept was completely baffling. He immediately wondered how an adult could physically enter their motherโ€™s womb a second time. Like many of us, Nicodemus was looking at a spiritual reality through a purely physical lens. But Jesus was speaking of a radical, internal transformationโ€”a spiritual rebirth.

To understand why we must be born again, we have to recognize our natural state. Physical birth brings us into this world with a human nature, but that nature is inherently broken and separated from God by sin. No amount of self-improvement, religious rule-following, or moral striving can bridge that gap. Nicodemus was a moral, deeply religious man, yet Jesus told him that even his best efforts were not enough to see the kingdom of God.

Being born again means receiving a completely new life from above. It is an act of the Holy Spirit where our old, spiritually dead nature is replaced with a living spirit, reconciled to God through faith in Jesus Christ. It is not a modification of our old life, but the beginning of an entirely new one. When we surrender to Christ, the Holy Spirit regenerates our hearts, giving us new desires, a new identity, and a citizenship in God’s eternal kingdom.

If you have been trying to earn your way into God’s favor or feeling exhausted by the weight of trying to be “good enough,” Jesus offers a beautiful release. You do not need to fix your old life; you need a new birth. By turning away from self-reliance and placing your trust in the finished work of Jesus on the cross, you can experience the profound, transformative reality of being born again.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the beautiful truth found in Your Word. We praise You that You do not leave us to rescue ourselves from our own brokenness, but instead offer us a fresh start and eternal life through Jesus Christ.

Holy Spirit, we ask that You search our hearts today. If there is any area where we are relying on our own strength, our own goodness, or our own religious efforts, help us to surrender it to You. For anyone reading this who has not yet experienced this spiritual rebirth, I pray that You would open their eyes to the beauty of Your gospel and give them the faith to trust in Jesus as their Savior.

Thank You for making us new creations. Help us to walk daily in the power of Your Holy Spirit, living out the reality of Your kingdom here on earth. We love You, and we give You all the glory.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

THE LORD WAS ABOUT TO KILL HIM / EXODUS 4:24

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 4:24

And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the Lord met him, and sought to kill him.

Understanding the Strange Incident at the Inn: Godโ€™s Standard for Leaders

It is one of the most jarring and unexpected verses in the entire Old Testament. Exodus 4:24 states, “At a lodging place on the way, the Lord met Moses and was about to kill him.“

Just chapters earlier, God spoke to Moses from a burning bush, calling him to rescue Israel from Egypt. Moses was the chosen deliverer, armed with miraculous signs and divine authority. Yet, on his journey back to Egypt, his life was suddenly placed in mortal dangerโ€”not by Pharaoh, but by the very God who called him.

Why would God threaten to kill the man He just commissioned?

The Crisis of Disobedience

The answer lies in a critical, personal neglect: Moses had failed to perform the covenant sign of circumcision on his own son.

Centuries earlier, God established circumcision with Abraham as an everlasting covenant, calling it a physical sign of belonging to Him (Genesis 17:11). To refuse or neglect this sign was to break the covenant. In Moses’ case, this was a glaring act of disobedience. He was on his way to lead an entire nation into a covenant relationship with Yahweh, yet his own household was not in order.

Whether due to fear, procrastination, or opposition from his wife, Zipporah, Moses allowed compromise into his home. To correct this, God likely afflicted Moses with a sudden, life-threatening condition at the inn, bringing him to the brink of death until the obedience was fulfilled.

Private Character Precedes Public Calling

This intense passage reveals a profound truth that echoes across scripture: Godโ€™s special purpose for our lives depends entirely on our personal obedience to Him.

  • No one is above God’s law: True leadership in God’s kingdom is not measured by spiritual gifts or public platforms, but by private faithfulness.
  • Holiness is non-negotiable: God will not use a leader to preach covenant faithfulness to others while that leader willfully ignores it in their own life.
  • A Call to Diligence: As the Apostle Peter later wrote, we must “be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure” (1 Peter 1:10).

Mosesโ€™ story reminds us that God takes our secret compromises seriously. He loves us too much to let us carry hidden rebellion into our divine destiny. Before Moses could face Pharaoh, he had to face his own compromised devotion.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We come before You humbled by the holiness of Your character and the weight of Your calling. Forgive us for the areas in our lives where we have neglected Your commands or allowed compromise to take root. We ask that You search our hearts today and reveal any hidden disobedience.

Give us the courage to make things right, even when it is painful or uncomfortable. Help us to remember that public service for Your kingdom can never replace private obedience to Your word. May our households and our hearts reflect Your holiness. Sanctify us, use us, and keep us faithful to Your covenant.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

ISRAEL MY FIRSTBORN / EXODUS 4:22

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 4:22

And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord, Israel is my son, even my firstborn:

Israel, My Firstborn: Understanding Godโ€™s Special Relationship

When we read the narrative of the Exodus, we often focus on the dramatic plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, and the confrontation between Moses and Pharaoh. However, tucked away in Exodus 4:22 is a profound statement that defines the heart of Godโ€™s relationship with His people:

“Then you shall say to Pharaoh, โ€˜Thus says the Lord: Israel is My son, My firstborn.โ€™”

This is the very first time in Scripture that God refers to Israel collectively as His “son” and “firstborn.” It is a title dripping with intimacy, covenant, and purpose.

The Meaning of the Firstborn

In the ancient Near East, the firstborn held a position of unique privilege, inheritance, and responsibility. By calling Israel His firstborn, God was declaring His special love and unique relationship with this nation. They were not chosen because they were greater or more righteous than others, but because of God’s sovereign affection and covenant promises.

But being the firstborn also meant being the exemplar for the rest of the family. Israel was called to be a light to the nations, showing the rest of the world what it meant to belong to the living God.

From a Nation to a King

As redemptive history unfolds, God begins to narrow and clarify what this “sonship” means. Centuries after the Exodus, God established a covenant with King David. In 2 Samuel 7:14, God promises concerning Davidโ€™s royal line: “I will be his Father, and he shall be My son.”

This relationship is echoed beautifully in the messianic Psalms 2:7: “You are My Son, today I have begotten You.” The title of Godโ€™s son shifted from the collective nation of Israel to the specific, anointed King who would rule over them.

The Ultimate Firstborn: Jesus Christ

The ultimate fulfillment of this language points directly to Jesus Christ, who came through the line of David. The New Testament makes it clear that Jesus is the true, perfect embodiment of Israel and the ultimate Firstborn.

  • Luke 1:35; Luke 3:22: At His birth and His baptism, the heavens declare Him to be the holy Son of God.
  • Hebrews 1:5-13: The author of Hebrews uses the exact Old Testament royal sonship passages to prove that Jesus is superior to angels, reigning as the ultimate heir of all things.

Jesus is Godโ€™s only begotten Sonโ€”the Firstborn of all creation. Through Him, the privilege of sonship is no longer limited by genealogy. Anyone who trusts in Jesus is adopted into the family of God, receiving the inheritance of the firstborn.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We marvel at the depth of Your love and the consistency of Your promises throughout history. Thank You for choosing Israel as Your firstborn and for revealing Your heart of fatherly devotion. We thank You most of all for Jesus Christโ€”the ultimate Firstborn, the perfect Son, and our Savior.

Thank You that through His sacrifice and resurrection, we have been adopted into Your family. Help us to walk worthy of the calling we have received, reflecting Your light and holiness to the world around us. May our lives honor You as our Father.

In Jesus’ beautiful name, Amen.

I WILL HARDEN HIS HEART / EXODUS 4:21

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 4:21

And the Lord said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go.

Plia-ble or Petrified? The Mystery and Warning of a Hardened Heart

It is one of the most troubling phrases in the entire Old Testament. Before Moses even packs his bags to return to Egypt, God gives him a startling preview of the upcoming battle of wills:

โ€œAnd the Lord said to Moses, โ€˜When you go back to Egypt, see that you do all those wonders before Pharaoh which I have put in your hand. But I will harden his heart, so that he will not let the people go

.โ€™โ€ โ€” Exodus 4:21

At first glance, this verse feels deeply uncomfortable. It makes us ask tough questions about free will, fairness, and the character of God. Did Pharaoh even have a choice? Did God manipulate him into being the villain just to show off His power?

When we look closer at the full narrative of Exodus, we find a profound warning about human prideโ€”and an urgent call to check the condition of our own hearts.

The Two Sides of a Hard Heart

To understand Exodus 4:21, we have to trace the phrase throughout the entire story. The book of Exodus actually uses three different Hebrew words for “harden” and attributes the action to both God and Pharaoh.

  • Pharaoh Hardened His Own Heart: In the early plagues, the text repeatedly states that Pharaoh hardened his own heart (e.g., Exodus 7:13, 8:15, 8:32). He was driven by ego, pride, and the belief that he himself was a god. He chose rebellion.
  • God Hardened Pharaohโ€™s Heart: Only after Pharaoh repeatedly chose to shut out the truth did God actively step in to “harden” what was already stiffening.

Think of it like the sun shining on two different materials. The exact same sun that softens wax will bake clay until it is rock-hard. Godโ€™s signs and wonders were the sun. Moses’s message was the sun. But because of who Pharaoh chose to be, the warmth of Godโ€™s presence only cemented his rebellion. God did not force an innocent, soft-hearted king to become evil; He simply handed Pharaoh over to the natural consequences of his own stubborn choices.

The Danger of Living in “Egypt”

We like to distance ourselves from Pharaoh, but the truth is that the human heart is highly susceptible to the same condition. Pride, unresolved emotional trauma, spiritual apathy, and ongoing compromise can quietly calcify our hearts over time.

When we disregard God’s promptings, ignore the conviction of the Holy Spirit, or insist on having our own way, a microscopic layer of stone forms over our souls. Do it enough times, and we find ourselves completely desensitized to His voice.

The Good News: Hearts of Stone Can Melt

The warning of Exodus is severe, but it points us directly to our need for a Savior. God does not want us to stay trapped in a state of spiritual bankruptcy or pride. Hundreds of years after Moses, God made a beautiful promise to His people through the prophet Ezekielโ€”a promise that directly counters the tragedy of Pharaoh:

โ€œI will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.โ€ โ€” Ezekiel 36:26

No matter how cold, defensive, or stubborn your heart has felt lately, it is never too stubborn for the grace of God. If you ask Him for a soft, pliable heart today, He will always answer. Let’s make that our prayer.

A Closing Prayer for a Soft Heart

Heavenly Father,

We come to You acknowledging that our hearts can easily grow cold, proud, and defensive. Forgive us for the times we have resisted Your voice, chosen our own comfort over Your truth, and allowed the cares of this world to harden our spirits.

Lord, remove any trace of a heart of stone within us today. Break through our outer defenses, heal our inner wounds, and give us hearts of fleshโ€”pliable, soft, and ready to be molded by Your Word and Spirit. We pray also for those around us whose hearts seem entirely hardened to Your love; we ask that Your Holy Spirit draw them, open their eyes, and reveal the beauty of Jesus to them.

Keep us humble, keep us listening, and help us always to submit our will to Yours.

In Jesusโ€™ name, Amen.

WHO MAKES HIM BLIND? / EXODUS 4:11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 4:11

And the Lord said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the Lord?

Who Makes Him Blind? Understanding God’s Sovereignty and Our Broken World

When Moses stood before the burning bush, full of insecurity and stammering for excuses, he asked God how he could possibly speak to Pharaoh. Godโ€™s response in Exodus 4:11 is both startling and profound: โ€œWho has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord?โ€

At first glance, this verse can feel uncomfortable. Does it mean God actively causes every disability, illness, or physical limitation?

To understand this deeply, we have to look at the grand narrative of Scripture.

The Source of Brokenness

Scripture is clear that God has ultimate power over all creationโ€”He has the power to allow, cause, or heal any condition. However, this does not mean every person who is mute, deaf, or blind is in that situation because God explicitly desired it as a personal punishment or direct action.

Like all disease, sickness, and physical limitations, these conditions are originally the result of Satanโ€™s activity and the entrance of sin into the world through Adam in Genesis 3. We live in a fractured creation, a world operating under the weight of the Fall.

Suffering is Not a Measure of Personal Sin

When we see someone suffering or facing a physical disability, human nature often looks for a direct cause-and-effect relationship. In John 9:2-3, the disciples asked Jesus a similar question about a man born blind: โ€œRabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?โ€

Jesusโ€™ response reshaped their entire perspective. He answered that neither the man nor his parents sinned to cause this, but it happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.

Suffering does not necessarily occur because an individual has committed a specific sin. Rather, we live in a fallen world where sickness and hardship exist, affecting everyone in some way.

Comfort in His Sovereignty

The ultimate comfort of Exodus 4:11 is not that God is the author of pain, but that God is supreme over it. No limitation catches Him by surprise. No brokenness is beyond His authority or His ability to redeem.

When you feel inadequate, limited, or worn down by the brokenness of this world, remember that the Creator of your mouth, your eyes, and your heart knows exactly where you are. He doesn’t need perfect vessels; He simply asks for willing ones.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We come before You acknowledging that You are the Creator of all things. You hold the ultimate power over life, health, and healing, and nothing is impossible for You. Lord, we look at the brokenness, sickness, and limitations in our world, and we recognize them as remnants of a world fractured by sin. Yet, we take comfort knowing that You are sovereign over every circumstance.

Comfort those who are walking through seasons of physical limitation or suffering. Reassure their hearts that their pain is not a measure of Your love or a direct penalty for their past. Instead, let Your grace be sufficient for them. Display Your power, Your comfort, and Your healing light through their lives. Give us the perspective of Jesusโ€”to see every trial as an opportunity for Your magnificent works to be revealed. We trust our bodies, our minds, and our spirits into Your capable hands.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I AM SLOW OF SPEECH / EXODUS 4:10

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 4:10

And Moses said unto the Lord, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.

Overcoming the “Slow of Speech” Excuse: Trusting Godโ€™s Equipping

We have all been there. God drops a prompt into your heartโ€”to speak to a coworker, step into a leadership role, or share your storyโ€”and your immediate reaction is to list all the reasons why you are the wrong person for the job.

If that sounds familiar, you are in good company. Moses, one of the greatest leaders in history, started his journey with a list of excuses.

In Exodus 4:10, Moses protests his calling by saying, “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.”

Moses looked at his own mouth, saw his limitations, and assumed God had made a mistake. But Godโ€™s response to Moses reveals a profound truth for our lives today: When God calls you to a task, He will give you the means and ability to fulfill it.

The Anatomy of an Excuse

Moses was focusing entirely on his natural abilities. He was likely thinking about the fast-talking advisors in Pharaoh’s court and compared himself to them. He felt inadequate, and honestly, on a human level, he probably was.

But Moses forgot who he was talking to. God didnโ€™t need Mosesโ€™s eloquence; He needed Mosesโ€™s obedience.

In Exodus 4:11- 12, the Lord fires back with a perspective shift:

“Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the Lord? Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.”

God Doesn’t Call the Equipped; He Equips the Called

If God only used people who had it all together, nothing supernatural would ever happen on this earth. God delights in using our weaknesses to showcase His strength.

The Apostle Paul echoed this exact principle centuries later in 2 Corinthians 3:5-6:

“Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament…”

Your sufficiency doesn’t come from your degree, your personality type, your past successes, or your natural talents. Your sufficiency comes from God.

Step Out in Faith

If you are waiting until you feel 100% ready, confident, and perfectly polished before you obey God, you will be waiting forever. God didn’t cure Moses’s speech before he went to Egypt; He promised to be with his mouth as he went. The power was in the partnership with the Divine.

Whatever “slow of speech” excuse you are holding onto todayโ€”whether you feel too young, too old, too broken, or too unqualifiedโ€”lay it down. The Creator of your mouth, your mind, and your heart is the one backing you up. Go where He sends you. He will give you the words.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that You do not see me the way I see myself. Forgive me for the times I have let my insecurities and excuses turn into disobedience. Forgive me for looking at my own limitations instead of Your limitless power.

Lord, I surrender my “slow of speech” moments to You today. Whatever task, conversation, or calling You have placed in front of me, I ask for Your strength to step into it. Remind me that my sufficiency comes entirely from You and not from my own abilities. Be with my mouth, guide my steps, and let Your power be made perfect in my weakness.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

STAFF โ€ฆ BECAME A SNAKE / EXODUS 4:2-3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Exodus 4:2-3

ย And the Lord said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod. 3 And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it.

What is in Your Hand? Moving from Ordinary Comfort to Extraordinary Commission

We often look at the giants of faith and assume they possessed something extraordinary from the very beginning. We see Moses confronting the most powerful empire in the ancient world, and we imagine a man brimming with supernatural resources.

But when God called Moses out of the burning bush, Moses didn’t feel powerful. He felt completely inadequate. In Exodus 4:1, he voices a fear that many of us know all too well: โ€œWhat if they will not believe me or listen to what I say?โ€

Godโ€™s response to Mosesโ€™ insecurity is a profound question that echoes through the centuries to us today: โ€œWhat is that in your hand?โ€

The Ordinary Made Extraordinary

The Lord said to him, โ€œWhat is that in your hand?โ€ And he said, โ€œA staff.โ€ Then He said, โ€œThrow it on the ground.โ€ So he threw it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it. โ€” Exodus 4:2-3

Moses was holding a shepherdโ€™s staff. It was the ultimate symbol of his ordinary, day-to-day routine. It represented his livelihood, his comfort zone, and his identity for the past forty years in the wilderness. It was just a dead piece of wood.

But God commanded him to do something uncomfortable: “Throw it on the ground.”

The moment Moses surrendered what was in his hand, the ordinary became extraordinary. The dead wood became a living, breathing, terrifying snakeโ€”so fierce that Moses instinctively ran from it. God took what was natural and exposed the supernatural power underlying His divine commission. Later, God would tell Moses to pick it back up by the tail, transforming it back into a staffโ€”but it was no longer just Moses’ rod. It became known as “the staff of God.”

Miracles and the New Covenant Ministry

God used these miraculous signs to validate Mosesโ€™ message to Pharaoh and to build faith within a weary Israel.

As believers serving Christ under the New Covenant, we are reminded that our ministry is also characterized by the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit. The same God who transformed a wooden staff can transform a broken life, heal a hardened heart, and bring spiritual life out of absolute deadness.

The miracles of the New Covenant might not always look like physical staffs turning into serpents, but they are no less miraculous. Every time a soul passes from death to life, every time deep-seated bitterness is replaced by supernatural forgiveness, and every time the Gospel breaks the chains of addiction, a miracle of the highest order has taken place.

We do not serve Christ out of our own strength or eloquence. Like Moses, our human hands are weak. But when we surrender our ordinary tools, talents, and time to the Living God, He infuses them with His power to confirm the truth of His Gospel to a watching world.

Surrendering Your “Staff”

What is in your hand today?

  • Is it a career?
  • A specific talent?
  • A bank account?
  • A quiet, ordinary life?

As long as you hold onto it tightly for your own security, it remains just a ordinary staff. But when you are willing to lay it down at the feet of Jesus, God can turn it into a tool for revival, deliverance, and supernatural impact. Don’t be afraid to drop what is familiar so that God can show you what He can do with it.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, Almighty God,

Thank You that You do not look for the fully equipped, but You equip those whom You call. Forgive us for the times we look at our own limitations and make excuses, forgetting that You are the Maker of all things.

Lord, we lift up what is in our hands today. We surrender our ordinary talents, our daily routines, our resources, and our fears to You. We lay them down at Your feet. We ask that You take our small, ordinary offerings and use them for Your extraordinary glory. Let Your supernatural power mark our lives and our ministries under the New Covenant, so that others may see Your works and believe in Jesus Christ, our Great Deliverer.

In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray, Amen.

SHOW NO PITY / DEUTERONOMY 19:21

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Deuteronomy 19:21

And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

The Courage to Stop Evil: Why God Says โ€œShow No Pityโ€

When we read Deuteronomy 19:21, the words cut straight to the chest: โ€œShow no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.โ€

To our modern ears, โ€œshow no pityโ€ sounds cold. We serve a God of mercy, so why would He command judges to harden their hearts?

When we dig deeper, we discover that this command is actually a profound act of love for the community. It outlines a foundational truth about how healthy societies must deal with crime, how we protect the innocent, and how we balance public justice with personal grace.

1. Justice Must Fit the Crime

The principle of lex talionisโ€”an eye for an eyeโ€”is repeated throughout Scripture (Exodus 21:22-25; Leviticus 24:17-20). While it sounds harsh today, it was originally given to limit punishment, not escalate it.

Before this law, if someone from another tribe broke your tooth, human nature would drive you to take their life or wipe out their family. God stepped in and set a strict boundary: the punishment must match the offense, but it must never exceed it. It established a standard of absolute fairness.

2. The Danger of Misplaced Pity

Why does God explicitly say โ€œshow no pityโ€? Because partiality and emotional loopholes in a courtroom allow evil to fester.

When a society refuses to enforce a punishment that is equal to the harm done, it naturally encourages evil and violence in the land (Deuteronomy 19:19). Misplaced pity for a malicious criminal results in cruelty toward the innocent and unprotected. True love for a community requires the courage to enact boundaries that deter wickedness. Justice is the shield that keeps the vulnerable safe.

3. Godโ€™s Standard for Government vs. The Individual

A common misunderstanding is that Jesus completely canceled this principle in the New Testament. He didnโ€™t. Instead, Scripture draws a clear line between civil governance and personal relationships:

  • For Society (The Government): The New Testament does not void the principle of equal justice. Romans 13:1-4 explicitly states that civil authorities are established by God as โ€œagents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.โ€ Governments need laws and consequences to restrain evil and maintain peace.
  • For the Individual (Your Heart): In Matthew 5:38-41, Jesus addresses our personal relationships. He strictly forbids the law of retaliationโ€”getting personal revenge or harboring bitterness. While the courts must uphold the law, our personal response to offense must be marked by grace, patience, and a willingness to entrust vengeance to God.

Closing Prayer

Father, You are a God of perfect justice and perfect mercy. We thank You that Your laws are designed to protect the innocent, restrain evil, and bring order to a broken world. Give our leaders and judges the wisdom and courage to uphold true justice without partiality, protecting the vulnerable from harm.

At the same time, search our individual hearts today. Root out any desire for personal revenge, bitterness, or retaliation. Remind us of the ultimate cross, where Your perfect justice and Your radical mercy metโ€”where Jesus took the punishment we deserved so we could walk in freedom. Help us live with just hands and merciful hearts. In Jesusโ€™ name, Amen.

A PROPHET LIKE ME / DEUTERONOMY 18:15

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Deuteronomy 18:15

The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;

A Prophet Like Me: Seeing Jesus in Deuteronomy

When we read the Old Testament, it can sometimes feel like a collection of ancient rules and historical accounts. However, if we look closer, we find that the entire narrative points forward to a single, world-changing figure. In Deuteronomy 18:15, Moses stands before the Israelites and delivers a profound promise:

“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him.”

This wasn’t just a practical plan for Israel’s leadership; it was a prophetic window looking ahead to Jesus Christ, the Messiah.

The Expectation of “The Prophet”

Throughout the Old Testament, Israel had many incredible prophetsโ€”from Elijah to Isaiahโ€”but none completely matched the unique role of Moses. Moses was Israelโ€™s deliverer, lawgiver, and the mediator who stood in the gap between a holy God and a broken people. As generations passed, the Jewish people eagerly anticipated the specific arrival of this promised “Prophet like Moses”.

By the time of the New Testament, this expectation was at an all-time high:

  • When John the Baptist began preaching, religious leaders came out to ask him directly, “Are you the Prophet?” (John 1:21).
  • After Jesus miraculously fed the five thousand, the crowds immediately recognized the sign, declaring, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world” (John 6:14).
  • When Philip found Nathanael, his excited announcement relied on this very scripture: “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law” (John 1:45).

How Jesus Fulfills the Promise

Both Peter and Stephen explicitly declare in the book of Acts that Jesus Christ is the ultimate fulfillment of Mosesโ€™ words (Acts 3:22-26, Acts 7:37). Jesus was a fellow Israelite, raised up from among His brothers, sent to speak the words of the Father with absolute divine authority.

While Jesus was like Moses, He is also far greater than Moses:

MosesJesus
Delivered Israel from physical slavery in Egypt.Delivers humanity from the spiritual slavery of sin and death.
Brought Godโ€™s Law written on tablets of stone.Brings grace, truth, and writes the Law on our hearts (John 1:17).
Mediated an earthly covenant at Mount Sinai.Mediates a New Covenant, sealing it with His own blood (Hebrews 9:15).
Guided the people toward a temporary Promised Land.Leads us into an eternal, unshakeable Kingdom.

Our Response: “You Must Listen to Him”

The command attached to Deuteronomy 18:15 is simple but weighty: “You must listen to him.”

Centuries later on the Mount of Transfiguration, as Moses and Elijah stood beside Jesus, God the Father spoke from a cloud and echoed this ancient command word-for-word: “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!“ (Matthew 17:5).

To listen to Jesus means more than just hearing His words casually; it means shifting our allegiance to Him. It means tuning out the noise, distractions, and false cultural narratives of our day so we can tune into the voice of the True Shepherd. When we build our lives on His truth, we walk in freedom, purpose, and life eternal.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your perfect faithfulness across the generations. Thank You for keeping Your promise to raise up a Deliverer and Spokesman who would perfectly reveal Your heart to us. Lord Jesus, we recognize You today as the ultimate Prophet, Savior, and King. Forgive us for the times we have listened to the loud distractions of the world instead of Your gentle voice. We choose today to tune our hearts to Your truth. Guide our steps, shape our desires, and lead us deeper into Your eternal kingdom. In Your holy name we pray, Amen.
