START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Deuteronomy 16:1
Observe the month of Abib, and keep the passover unto the Lord thy God: for in the month of Abib the Lord thy God brought thee forth out of Egypt by night.
Keeping the Feast: Why Deuteronomy 16:1 Reminds Us to Remember
In the hustle of modern life, it is easy to lose our sense of spiritual rhythm. We drift from season to season, often forgetting the deep roots of our faith. But thousands of years ago, God established a rhythm designed specifically to combat our spiritual amnesia.
In Deuteronomy 16:1, we find a powerful command that anchors the identity of God’s people:
“Observe the month of Abib and celebrate the Passover of the Lord your God, because in the month of Abib he brought you out of Egypt by night.”
The Command to Observe
The Hebrew word for “observe” used here implies more than just looking at a calendar. It means to watch over, guard, and hedge around. God is telling His people to actively protect this time. Why? Because the Passover is the ultimate reminder of deliverance. It marks the precise moment God broke the chains of slavery in Egypt and ushered His people into freedom.
Caught in the Rhythm of Grace
By anchoring the Passover in the month of Abib (the time of fresh, green ears of barley), God aligned their spiritual rescue with the physical arrival of spring and new life.
For modern believers, this verse challenges us to ask: What are we guarding? What are we remembering? Just as Israel looked back to the night they fled Egypt, we look back to the ultimate Passover Lamb—Jesus Christ—whose sacrifice delivered us from the spiritual bondage of sin and death.
When we observe God’s faithfulness, our gratitude is renewed, and our faith for the future is strengthened. Let us not forget the night He brought us out of our own darkness.
A Closing Prayer for Remembrance
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for being a God who delivers, rescues, and redeems. Just as You commanded Your people of old to observe the Passover and remember Your mighty hand, we pause today to remember Your grace in our own lives.
Forgive us for the times we let the busyness of life dull our gratitude. Help us to guard our hearts and intentionally remember the moments You brought us out of our own “Egypts”—out of despair, sin, and fear.
Thank You for the ultimate sacrifice of the Passover Lamb, Jesus Christ, through whom we have true freedom. May our lives be a perpetual celebration of Your goodness, and may we live every day in the light of Your deliverance.
In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
