(KJV) Deuteronomy 5:29

O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!

Oh That Their Hearts Would Be Inclined to Fear Me

The biblical history of salvation basically tells the story of God’s gracious and tireless efforts to rescue men and women from the destructive consequences of sin and bring them into a personal relationship with Him. Throughout scripture, we see a patient Creator pursuing a wandering people, not to restrict them, but to restore them.

Nowhere is the tender, yearning heart of God more vividly displayed than in Deuteronomy 5:29:

“Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever!”

The Heart Behind the Command

When we hear the word “fear,” our modern minds often jump to terror or dread. But in the biblical context, the fear of the Lord is a holy reverence. It is an awe-filled recognition of who God is—His absolute holiness, justice, and love—coupled with a deep desire to please Him.

Notice that God does not ask for empty rituals or mechanical obedience. He looks directly at the source: the heart.

God desires a heart that is naturally inclined toward Him. Like a compass needle that always corrects itself to point north, an inclined heart continuously turns back to God, finding its true orientation in His presence.

For Our Good Always

Why is God so passionate about our obedience? Is He a cosmic tyrant demanding compliance for His own ego? The end of the verse beautifully shatters that misconception: “so that it might go well with them and their children forever!”

God’s commands are not chains to bind us; they are guardrails to protect us. Every boundary God sets is rooted in His love. He knows that life works best when it aligns with the design of the Creator. When we fear Him and walk in His ways, we position ourselves and our families under a canopy of grace, peace, and spiritual legacy.

The story of salvation is the ultimate proof of Deuteronomy 5:29. Because our hearts were prone to wander, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to give us new hearts. Through Christ, the Holy Spirit softens our stubbornness and inclines our hearts to genuinely love, revere, and follow Him.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We thank You for Your relentless, pursuing love. Your heart has always been to rescue us from the destructive paths of sin and bring us into a vibrant relationship with You. Forgive us for the times our hearts have grown cold or indifferent to Your voice.

Lord, we pray today according to Your own holy desire: incline our hearts to fear You. Cultivate within us a deep, profound reverence for who You are. Soften the hard places in our souls. Give us a willing spirit to keep Your commands, not out of duty, but out of absolute love and awe.

We pray for our families and the generations to come. May our obedience today pave a path of blessing for our children tomorrow. Let it go well with us, Lord, as we anchor our lives in Your truth.
