START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Mark 13:28
Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near:
The Lesson of the Fig Tree: Discerning the Seasons of Faith
Have you ever looked at a tree in late winter and wondered if life would ever return to its brittle branches? Then, seemingly overnight, the tips turn green, buds swell, and you know—without a doubt—that summer is on the way.
In Mark 13:28, Jesus uses this exact, everyday miracle of nature to teach us a profound truth about spiritual alertness and hope:
“Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.”
Understanding the Context
In this chapter, often called the Olivet Discourse, the disciples are asking Jesus about the end of the age and the destruction of the temple. It is a conversation filled with heavy warnings about trials, false prophets, and shaking foundations.
But right in the middle of these heavy prophecies, Jesus pauses to point at a fig tree.
In Israel, most trees are evergreen, but the fig tree loses its leaves in the winter. When it begins to bud, it is an unmistakable, universal sign that the cold season is ending. Jesus wasn’t trying to give the disciples a complex mathematical formula to calculate the exact day of His return. Instead, He was teaching them how to read the spiritual climate.
Two Powerful Lessons for Us Today
- Spiritual Attentiveness: Jesus calls us to live with our eyes open. It is easy to become spiritually heavy or distracted by the noise of the world. The fig tree reminds us to watch for God’s hand at work in our world and in our personal lives.
- Anchor of Hope: Winter does not last forever. When the world feels chaotic or dark, the budding fig tree is a promise that God’s timeline is moving forward, and His kingdom is drawing near.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the beautiful reminders of Your faithfulness written all across creation. Forgive us for the times we become so consumed by the winters of life that we fail to see the new growth You are bringing forth.
Grant us spiritual discernment. Help us to keep our hearts alert, our eyes open, and our faith anchored in Your unchanging Word. When the world around us feels shaken, remind us that Your promises stand firm and Your kingdom is near. Teach us to live with the hopeful expectation of Your return.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
