For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

Guarding the Truth: When Tradition Overpowers Truth

We all love traditions. Whether it’s a specific way your family celebrates holidays, the order of service at your local church, or the way you start your morning routine, traditions provide comfort, predictability, and a sense of identity. But what happens when our traditions quietly morph into commandments? What happens when our preferences start dictating how we judge others’ faith?

In Mark 7:8, Jesus delivers a sharp, piercing wake-up call to the religious leaders of His day—and to us:

“You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”

The Danger of “The Traditions of Men”

The Pharisees and teachers of the law were not bad people trying to destroy religion; they were deeply religious people trying to protect it. Over centuries, they built a complex system of human laws and regulations designed to keep people from breaking God’s actual laws.

The problem? They began to value the fence more than the vineyard. Eventually, they were guilty of placing human tradition above God’s direct revelation. They followed their own rules even when those regulations completely contradicted the standards of God’s Word.

It is vital to note that Jesus is not condemning all traditions. Traditions can be beautiful and anchors for our faith (2 Thessalonians 2:15). Instead, Jesus is specifically condemning those human rules that contradict, conflict with, or replace the commands and principles of Scripture.

Checking Our Own “Fences”

It is easy to look at the Pharisees and shake our heads, but modern churches and believers face the exact same temptation. We must constantly resist the tendency to promote our own rules, ideas, and cultural preferences to the status of divine law.

Preferences vs. Principles: Do we value a specific style of music, dress code, or service structure more than the actual fruit of the Spirit in someone’s life?
Human Ideas vs. Holy Writ: Are we teaching human opinions as if they carried the weight of eternity?

God’s written Word is the only infallible, unfailing, and perfectly reliable rule for faith and living. Human ideas must never become more important than God’s Word (Mark 7:13; Matthew 15:6). When we elevate our preferences, we inadvertently heavy-burden others and distance ourselves from the heart of God.

Let us commit to holding tightly to God’s Word, and holding loosely to the traditions of men.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, praise You for the gift of Your written Word. Thank You that Your truth is infallible, flawless, and perfectly reliable for our lives. We confess that it is easy to let our own preferences, habits, and human traditions quietly take the place of Your commands. Give us eyes to see where we have elevated our own rules above Your love and truth. Keep our hearts anchored purely in Scripture, and grant us the humility to let go of any tradition that hinders us from fully obeying You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
