And when they came nigh to Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples, ²And saith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat; loose him, and bring him.

The Sovereign Setup: Steps of Peace and Prophecy

1. The Setting of the Stage (Mark 11:1)

“As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples…”

Jesus did not stumble into Jerusalem by accident, nor was He caught off guard by the authorities. He approached the city from the Mount of Olives—a location deeply tied to Jewish expectations of the Messiah’s arrival. By establishing His temporary staging ground in Bethany and Bethphage, Jesus positioned Himself exactly where prophecy dictated, signaling that the climax of God’s redemptive plan was officially underway.

2. The Specific Command (Mark 11:2)

“…saying to them, ‘Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.'”

Jesus gave His disciples hyper-specific instructions. He knew exactly what they would find, right down to the unridden status of the young donkey. This demonstrates His complete sovereignty. Furthermore, choosing a colt instead of a warhorse was a deliberate fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9. Jesus wasn’t coming as a conquering monarch to overthrow Rome by force; He was entering as the Prince of Peace, offering spiritual deliverance to a broken world.

Help us to yield to Your instructions just as the disciples did. Give us the courage to untie whatever You ask us to surrender, and may our lives serve as a vehicle for Your peace in a chaotic world. Guide our hearts as we meditate on Your sacrifice and celebrate Your ultimate victory over death.
