And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.

Chasing the Light: Finding Hope in the Transfiguration

We spend so much of our lives walking through ordinary, often heavy days. We carry responsibilities, endure seasons of waiting, and navigate the quiet anxieties of tomorrow. But every now and then, God pulls back the curtain of the mundane to remind us exactly who is in control.

In Mark 9:2, we encounter one of the most stunning moments in the New Testament:

“After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them.”

The word “transfigured” comes from the Greek word metamorphoo—the root of our modern word metamorphosis. This wasn’t just a spotlight shining on Jesus from the outside. This was the absolute, unfiltered glory of the King of Kings bursting forth from the inside out. For a brief moment on that mountain, His earthly veil was lifted, and His clothes became a radiant, dazzling white.

The Purpose of the Mountaintop

Why did Jesus reveal His glory at this exact moment? If you look at the context of Mark’s gospel, Jesus had just given His disciples some devastating news. He told them plainly that He was going to suffer, be rejected, and be killed.

The disciples were terrified and confused. Their expectations of a conquering political Messiah were shattered. They needed reassurance.

By taking Peter, James, and John up the mountain, Jesus was giving them a glimpse of the final destination. He was showing them that while the cross was real and painful, the glory waiting on the other side was far greater. The Transfiguration was divine proof that even in the midst of suffering, Jesus knew exactly what He was doing.

Tents and Down-Gradients

Like any of us who experience a beautiful moment of peace or spiritual clarity, Peter immediately wanted to stay there. He offered to pitch three tents to freeze that perfect moment in time.

But a voice from a cloud interrupted him: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him.”

We cannot live our lives entirely on the mountaintop. The glory revealed on the mountain was meant to fuel their faith for the valley below. The real miracle of Jesus’ life on earth was that He hid His radiant glory most of the time so that He could walk among us, suffer for us, and lead us home.

If you are walking through a valley today, hold tightly to the truth of Mark 9:2. The radiant, all-powerful Christ who stood on that mountain is the exact same Christ walking beside you in the dark. The suffering is temporary; His glory is eternal.

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for revealing Your magnificent power and glory through Your Son, Jesus Christ.When our days feel heavy and the valley feels dark, remind our hearts of the radiant light of the Transfiguration.Help us to quiet our busy minds and truly listen to Him.Give us the faith to trust that our current trials are not the end of the story, and that the path of the cross ultimately leads to Your eternal glory.Transform us from the inside out today.In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
