START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Mark 12:42
And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.
The Measure of a Heart: Lessons from Two Copper Coins
In a world that constantly measures success by numbers, volume, and grand displays, it is easy to feel like our small contributions don’t matter. We look at giant charities, massive donations, and highly visible acts of service, and we wonder: Does my small gift even make a difference?
The Gospel of Mark gives us a radical, comforting answer.
The Scene at the Temple
In Mark 12:41-44, Jesus sits opposite the temple treasury, watching the crowd put in their money. Many rich people walk up and throw in large sums. The clinking of heavy coins likely draws nods of approval from onlookers.
Then, a poor widow walks up. Unnoticed by the crowd, she drops in two small copper coins, worth only a few cents.
To the world, her contribution is statistically irrelevant. It wouldn’t even cover a fraction of the daily temple expenses. But Jesus immediately calls His disciples over. He doesn’t want them to miss what just happened.
“Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” (Mark 12:43-44)
How God Measures Generosity
Jesus reveals a profound truth about the Kingdom of God: God measures a person’s giving and generosity not only by the amount but also by the love, devotion, and sacrifice represented in the gift.
- The Rich Gave from Excess: Their giving required no change in lifestyle, no deep reliance on God, and no real sacrifice. It was comfortable.
- The Widow Gave from Essence: Her two copper coins represented her safety net, her next meal, her entire livelihood. Giving them required absolute trust.
The widow’s story (also recorded in Luke 21:1-4) reminds us that God does not look at the size of the check; He looks at the condition of the heart. He does not need our money, but He deeply desires our devotion. True generosity is not about what we can spare; it is about what we are willing to surrender.
Living Out the Lesson
You don’t need a massive bank account, a giant platform, or extraordinary talents to move the heart of God.
- If all you have is five minutes of peace in a chaotic day, give it to Him in prayer.
- If all you have is a single encouraging word for a lonely neighbor, speak it.
- If your financial offering feels small compared to others, give it with a heart full of love and trust.
When we offer our “two copper coins” with radical faith, God takes our small gifts and weaves them into His eternal story.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding us that You see what the world overlooks. Forgive us for the times we hold back, thinking our gifts, our time, or our talents are too small to matter to You. Grant us the faith of the poor widow, who held nothing back from You.
We ask for a spirit of radical generosity. Help us to give not out of comfort or obligation, but out of deep love, devotion, and trust in Your provision. We surrender what we have into Your hands, knowing that You measure the heart behind the gift. Take our small offerings and multiply them for Your glory.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
