Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

Chosen to Bloom: What It Really Means to Go and Bear Fruit

In the ancient world, becoming a disciple was a matter of personal selection. If you wanted to study the law or master a trade, you sought out a prominent rabbi or teacher, hoping they would deem you worthy to follow in their footsteps.

But Jesus completely flipped this cultural norm on its head. In John 15:16, He looks at His inner circle—and by extension, at every single one of us—and says: “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last.”

You are not an accidental follower. You were handpicked by the Creator for a specific, divine purpose: to go and bear fruit.

Cultivating the Inward Fruit: Godly Character

When Jesus talks about fruit-bearing, He isn’t talking about professional success or material wealth. The first dimension of spiritual fruit is the transformation of your inner life.

As we abide in Christ, the Holy Spirit begins to grow beautiful spiritual values and a godly character within us. This is the vivid spectrum of the fruit of the Spirit outlined in Galatians 5:22-23:

• Love that acts selflessly
• Joy that transcends circumstances
• Peace that guards your mind
• Patience when facing trials
• Kindness and goodness poured out onto others
• Faithfulness in the small things
• Gentleness in your interactions
• Self-control over your desires

This inner fruit is the natural overflow of a life rooted deep in the Vine. As you let Him refine your character, your life becomes a sweet offering, mirroring the heart of Christ to a broken world.

Sharing the Outward Fruit: Shined into the Darkness

Fruit is never meant to be stored away or kept to oneself; it is grown to be given away and consumed by those who are hungry. The second dimension of your calling is actively working for the spiritual salvation of others who do not yet have a personal relationship with Christ.

Jesus calls us to step out of our comfort zones. We are meant to sow seeds of truth, share our testimonies, and point others toward the redeeming love of Jesus. There is an urgent harvest waiting, and we have been appointed to labor in it so that others might pass from death into eternal life.

You were chosen with intention. Today, look for opportunities to share the fruit of your character and the truth of the Gospel with someone who needs it.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for choosing me and appointing me to be Your disciple. It is a humbling truth to know that I did not choose You first, but that You called me out of the darkness and into Your marvelous light with a distinct purpose.

I pray that my life would be a reflection of Your love. Holy Spirit, cultivate Your fruit within me today. Let love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control overflow from my heart so that others may see Your transformation in my character.

Give me the courage and the words to go out into the harvest. Open doors for me to share the message of salvation with those who do not yet know You. Use my life to plant seeds of faith that will bear lasting, eternal fruit for Your Kingdom.
