THE DEAD MAN CAME OUT / JOHN 11:44

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) John 11:44

And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

The miracle of Lazarus’ resurrection in John 11:44 serves as a powerful sign pointing to Jesus Christ, not only as the ultimate source of life, but as the embodiment of resurrection itself. When Jesus declared, “I am the resurrection and the life,” He revealed that final death is completely impossible for Him—a truth later vindicated by His own victory over the grave. What happened in Bethany was a physical preview of the eternal promise awaiting all faithful believers.

In John 11:44, we read the astonishing culmination of this event: “The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, ‘Take off the grave clothes and let him go.'”

This moment is far more than a historical marvel; it is a profound revelation of divine authority and grace.

A Nature Defined by Life

When Jesus stood before the tomb of His friend, He was not simply performing a miracle; He was demonstrating His core identity. As recorded in John 11:25-26, Jesus does not just give life—He is life. Because life is His very nature, death holds no permanent claim in His presence. The raising of Lazarus was the ultimate proof that the boundaries of mortality bend to the voice of the Creator.

A Promise for All Believers

What Jesus did for Lazarus is a beautiful archetype of what God will do for all His faithful people who have fallen asleep. The scriptures assure us that death is not the final chapter. Just as Lazarus stepped out of the dark tomb, all who sleep in Christ will be raised to new, eternal life (John 14:3; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). Lazarus’ restoration was temporary, as he would eventually face physical death again, but it points forward to an incorruptible resurrection where death is swallowed up in victory forever.

The Cost of the Miracle

Remarkably, this profound display of love and power was also the catalyst for the ultimate plot against Jesus. The religious leaders, driven by jealousy and fear of losing their status, viewed this undeniable miracle as the final offense. Instead of worshiping the Lord of Life, they gathered to decree that Jesus must be put to death (John 11:45-53). In a beautiful yet heartbreaking twist of divine providence, Jesus’ act of bringing Lazarus out of the tomb set into motion the events that would lead Him to His own cross—paying the price so that we might be set free from our own grave clothes.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we praise You today as the Almighty God who holds the power over life and death. Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, to be our Resurrection and our Life. We thank You that because He lives, we also can face tomorrow with unwavering hope, knowing that physical death is not our final end.

Lord, when we feel bound by the heavy grave clothes of fear, doubt, sorrow, or sin, we ask that You speak Your powerful words of liberty over our lives. Loose us from the things that hold us captive and empower us to walk in the fullness of Your freedom. Strengthen our faith in Your promise that we, and all Your faithful people, will one decline be raised to eternal glory with You. In the mighty and victorious name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
