START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Leviticus 19:19
Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.
Guarding Our Hearts: What Leviticus 19:19 Teaches Us About Purity Today
When we read through the Old Testament, certain laws can leave us scratching our heads. In Leviticus 19:19, God commands His people: “Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material.”
At a glance, a ban on blended fabrics feels completely disconnected from modern life. But when we look closer at the context, we uncover a timeless spiritual principle that matters just as much under the New Covenant as it did thousands of years ago: the call to uncompromised purity.
The Context: Set Apart from the Culture
To understand this law, we have to look at the world ancient Israel lived in. God had rescued them from Egypt and was leading them into the Promised Land. They were surrounded by pagan nations practicing sorcery, idolatry, and exploitation.
Historical context suggests that pagan priests often mixed different types of fabrics into their garments as part of their occult rituals and sorcery. By commanding Israel not to mix materials, God was creating a practical, daily boundary. It was a physical reminder to keep them from being subtly absorbed into surrounding cultures that did not walk in holiness.
Old Covenant Shadows, New Covenant Realities
As believers today, we live under the New Covenant. In Matthew 5:17, Jesus explained that He came not to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it.
Because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, many of the civil and ceremonial laws of Israel—like the ban on certain foods or mixed fabrics—no longer strictly bind us (Colossians 2:16-17). However, the moral laws and the core character of God never change.
While the symbolic rule of avoiding two fabrics passed away with the Old Covenant, the spiritual reality it pointed to remains urgent: God desires His people to live undivided lives.
Living an “Unmixed” Life
The ultimate principle of Leviticus 19:19 is uncompromised purity. God wants our devotion to be pure, whole, and unmixed with the values of a broken world.
It is easy to let our faith get blended with culture. We might mix:
- Truth with a little bit of deception
- Faith with worldly anxiety
- Worship of God with the pursuit of idols like money, status, or approval
God’s call to holiness is a invitation to step out of the gray areas. He doesn’t want a fragmented heart; He wants all of us. He calls us to be distinct, set apart, and safely anchored in His love.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your Word and the beautiful ways it reveals Your heart for us. Forgive us for the times we have allowed our faith to become mixed with the patterns, compromises, and distractions of this world. We ask that You create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within us. Help us to live lives of uncompromised purity, wholly devoted to You. May our choices, our thoughts, and our actions reflect Your holiness to the world around us. Guard our hearts and keep us set apart for Your good purposes.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
