(KJV) Leviticus 5:11
But if he be not able to bring two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, then he that sinned shall bring for his offering the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering; he shall put no oil upon it, neither shall he put any frankincense thereon: for it is a sin offering.
Fine Flour for a Sin Offering: God’s Radical Grace for the Poor
In the ancient sacrificial system of Leviticus, the shedding of blood was central. It serves as a vivid, sobering reminder of the heavy cost of sin, ultimately pointing forward to Jesus’ final sacrifice on the cross. But a closer look at Leviticus 5:11 reveals a beautiful, easily overlooked window into the heart of God: His radical accessibility.
What happened to those who were so desperately poor that they couldn’t afford a goat or a lamb? God did not shut them out of His presence. He provided a tier of grace. If they couldn’t afford livestock, they could bring two doves or pigeons. And if they were too poor even for birds, God allowed them to bring a small amount of fine flour as a sin offering.
The Exception to the Rule
We often quote Hebrews 9:22, which reminds us that “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” Yet, the writer of Hebrews carefully includes the qualifier “nearly everything” is cleansed with blood. Leviticus 5:11 is that beautiful “nearly.”
By allowing a bloodless offering of fine flour for the destitute, God made it clear that poverty is never a barrier to pardon. He cared more about reconciliation with the brokenhearted than the market value of their offering. The flour was placed on the altar, and the priest made atonement for them, making the poorest beggar just as clean as the wealthiest ruler.
The Only Perfect Sacrifice
While the fine flour met the immediate need under the Old Covenant, it was still a temporary shadow (Hebrews 10:1-10). It had to be offered over and over again. As Hebrews 10:4 reminds us, “it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins”—and the same was true for flour.
These detailed offerings were placeholders until the arrival of the ultimate sacrifice. Jesus Christ’s death on the cross is the only perfect sacrifice that can truly and permanently take away sin (Hebrews 10:12, 14). Through Him, the barrier has been torn down forever. You don’t need to bring a lamb, a bird, or a handful of flour. Jesus paid it all, ensuring that salvation is absolutely free and available to every single person, regardless of status, wealth, or past mistakes.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We thank You today for Your immense mercy and thoughtfulness. Thank You that from the very beginning, You made a way for the poor, the broken, and the forgotten to find forgiveness and near-access to Your heart. We praise You that poverty of spirit or pocket is never a barrier to Your grace.
Thank You, Lord Jesus, for being the ultimate, perfect sacrifice. You paid a debt we could never afford so that we could receive a righteousness we could never earn. May we rest securely today in Your finished work on the cross, knowing our sins are fully taken away. Help us to extend that same unconditional grace and accessibility to those around us.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
