But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.

No One Knows: Embracing the Mystery of Mark 13:32

We live in a world obsessed with certainty. We check the weather app before stepping outside, track our packages down to the minute, and use data to predict everything from market trends to sports scores. We love to be in the know.

But when it comes to the ultimate timeline—the culmination of history and the return of Christ—Jesus draws a sharp, definitive line in the sand.

In Mark 13:32, He declares:

“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.”

For generations, humanity has tried to bypass this verse. People write books, calculate timelines, and scan the headlines trying to crack the code. Yet, Jesus’ words remain an unshakeable boundary. If even the Son, in His earthly submission, deferred that timing to the Father, why do we waste our energy trying to guess?

From Anxiety to Anticipation

The mystery of “that day” isn’t meant to make us anxious, nor is it an excuse to become spiritually lazy. Instead, the secrecy of the hour serves a beautiful purpose: it keeps us present and dependent.

If we knew the exact date, we would likely procrastinate our faith. We might live carelessly today, planning to repent just in time. By withholding the calendar, God invites us into a daily, active relationship. The unknown hour shifts our posture from passive waiting to active, urgent readiness.

Living in readiness means:

Loving deeply today, because tomorrow is not guaranteed.
Sharing the gospel now, recognizing the urgency of the times.
Investing in the eternal, rather than holding too tightly to the temporary things of this world.

We do not know what the future holds, but we know who holds the future. Instead of obsessing over the when, let us focus on the who.

A Closing Prayer for Readiness

Heavenly Father,

You alone hold the times and seasons in Your hands. Forgive us for the moments we let curiosity turn into anxiety, or when we try to figure out things You have intentionally kept hidden. Thank You for the comfort of knowing that history is not spinning out of control—it is moving directly toward Your perfect conclusion.

Align our hearts with Your Holy Spirit today. Help us to live with a holy urgency, treating every day as a gift and an opportunity to serve You. Keep our lamps burning bright and our faith awake. May we be found faithful, loving, and working for Your kingdom whenever that day arrives.
